THQ has been undergoing a dramatic transformation as of late. A newfound focus on core games has led THQ to... further losses. For the quarter ending June 30th, the company reported a net loss of $38.4 million, and a certain game took the spotlight for the financial shortcoming. "We are disappointed in our first quarter financial performance," Brian Farrell, THQ CEO said. "Sales of Red Faction: Armageddon and our licensed kids titles were below our expectations."
The low sales figures may have been the death knell of the franchise.

Volition has announced that the farting unicorn--affectionately known as Mr. Toots--will indeed be added to the arsenal of weaponry found in Red Faction: Armageddon.
The living "weapon" was promised as a last-minute addition if the Armageddon demo for the was downloaded over one million times. Since downloads have hit that mark, the creature will be added to the game as an unlockable reward for completing the single-player campaign. Read more »

THQ and OnLive have partnered up again to give users that pre-order Red Faction: Armageddon a free OnLive MicroConsole device.
The deal is open from now through June 6. In order to qualify, players must purchase a "Full PlayPass" for the upcoming Volition-developed adventure through OnLive. THQ and OnLive previously ran a promotion to giveaway the MicroConsole with pre-orders for Homefront. Read more »

In what seems to be a growing tradition of incredibly strange, immersion-breaking downloadable content, Volition has announced that they'll be bringing a special weapon to Red Faction: Armageddon once the demo has been downloaded one million times.
That weapon? An adorable unicorn with severe flatulence, named Mr. Toots. For those paying close attention, the little bugger is the "very, very special treat for everyone" that Voltion's Dan Sutton alluded to near the end our early preview of Armageddon. Read more »

Although the latest video featuring footage for THQ's upcoming shooter Red Faction: Armageddon is labeled as a look at the "History" of the franchise, it's really a three-minute commercial for blowing everything up on Mars.
The most detail the video goes into regarding the older games in the franchise is to mention they existed with a quick glimpse at the game's box art. Once that "history" is out of the way, developers at Volition discuss the inclusion of aliens into the franchise as well as their love for destruction. Read more »

Publisher THQ has sent word that players looking forward to a return trip to Mars will have to wait a little longer. Originally planned for a May 31 release, Red Faction: Armageddon has been delayed until June 7.
Console gamers looking forward to sampling Armageddon before release will still be able to do so, thanks to the previously announced demo that's now due on May 3rd for Xbox 360. The PlayStation 3 demo is also slated to release on that day as well, but will be contingent on whether or not Sony is able to restore the PlayStation Network by then. Sadly, a PC demo isn't planned. A downloadable taste of Volition's smash-happy shooter Red Faction: Armageddon is on the way, slated to crash onto Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network on May 4. Sadly, the news is less good for PC gamers who also enjoy 'sploding things on Mars.
The demo takes place in that most exciting of video game environments--the sewers. Space-sewers, mind. Armed with weapons including the destruct-o-licious Magnet Gun, and the Nano Forge all-in-one repair kit to undo your magnetised mayhem, you'll get to blast through hordes of the awakened aliens. Aliens are, of course, known for their love of sewers. Read more »

Red Faction: Armageddon is just over a month away from release. Based on a few hours I spent playing Armageddon's single-player component, my recent impressions of the game's multiplayer components were just the tip of the iceberg. It feels like Volition aims to deliver a much more focused, story-driven single-player experience than was available in the preceding chapter, Red Faction: Guerrilla. Read more »

At a THQ-organized event in San Francisco I got to sit down and spend some quality time with the online modes in Red Faction: Armageddon. "Infestation" and "Ruin," as they're named, each offer their own twist on the Mars-based mayhem developer Volition has cooked up.
Infestation can be played either solo or cooperatively in a group of up to four. Players do their best to repel thirty waves of progressively more intense alien attacks. Infestation’s eight primary maps are broken into two groups of four by mission type. Survive maps are exactly like they sound; a fight just to make it to the end. Defend maps add a handful of structures that the team must prevent the aliens from destroying (while surviving, of course). Read more »

A new trailer for Red Faction: Armageddon has arrived, introducing the destructive shooter's streetwise and scientific smuggler, Kara. Apparently, she ran away from the Marauders at an early age, electing to pursue the popular vocation of transporting contraband between Mars and Earth. In other words, she's sort of like a cuter version of Han Solo. Read more »

THQ and Volition announced release dates for Red Faction Armageddon today, sounding significantly more sane than cult groups who babble about release dates for actual Armageddon. The Red Faction variety is set to hit PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 on May 31 for North America, and June 3 internationally.
The game is the sequel to the sandbox playground hit Red Faction Guerrilla, and keeps the same building destruction mechanics intact. In the US, the game is priced at $59.99, and is rated M -- which isn't surprising for a game that involves killing enemies with collapsing buildings. Read more »

"I wish I could destroy that building again," I said to myself while playing a three-level demo of Red Faction Armageddon at THQ's "Gamer's Day" in New York last week. Immediately I remembered that, with the press of a button, I could. Aiming Darius Mason's over-sized bracelet, the 'Nano Forge,' I was able to reform the destruction I had caused only moments ago. As the building began to rebuild itself, I realized that this was going to be a wild and emergent ride.
