Prototype 2 released on consoles in April, and critics and fans alike responded with a resounding, "sure, alright." PC users were left out in the cold at the time, because that's the way some games roll. But if you're suffering the summer doldrums and want in on a decent game, you can pick up the newly-available PC version.

There's kind-of-good-ish Prototype 2 news, and there's bad Prototype 2 news. The bad news is that the PC edition has been delayed until July 24. The kind-of-good-ish news is that a "limited launch quantity" of console copies will contain a single-use code that will unlock 55 pieces of downloadable content.

Prototype 2 has gotten a free promotional tie-in game for iOS devices, titled ProtoSlice. But rather than take on the role of protagonist James Heller, the puzzle game has you moving various blades to safely touch an on-screen button with your own finger. If you mistime your movements, the blades will cut your finger off -- virtually, probably -- and a bloody screen will let you know you've failed.

Prototype 2 takes place in New York City and features super-powers, so where better than New York Comic-Con to show off the latest trailer? The latest look at the game shows the protagonist Heller beating down some fools in his search for Mercer, the anti-hero of the last game. His personal stake involves a dead wife and daughter, and as comics like The Punisher have taught us, revenge can be a powerful motivator.

For PAX 2011, Activision brought out a "near alpha" version of Prototype 2. But what does that mean exactly? This recent build was meant to show off how much better the new game looks than its predecessor--and it worked. I didn't need to be told that enhancing the graphics engine was an important goal for the game. The evidence was right there in front of my eyes.
Along with the game's engine, a number of other tweaks have been made in response to criticisms of the original. For starters, civilians can now be simply set back down when picked up by accident. It's a nice gesture, and one that will likely get some use, because consuming civilians no longer recharges health; only enemies provide a boost.

QUICKTAKE: Radical Entertainment gets the band back together for a new entry in the Prototype series. Prototype 2 is a different beast though, as this time, players take on the role of a new character whose mission is to hunt and kill the man responsible for the outbreak in New York City featured in the original game. This time, the game's "big bad" is none other than the original game's playable character, Alex Mercer. (And no, Mercer is not playable.) Radical is adamant that changes have been made to Prototype 2 in response to criticisms people had with the first game, while peppering in new and interesting ideas to make the new hero a different breed of monster.

The E3 2011 trailer for Radical Entertainment's super-powered sequel Prototype 2 has arrived, overflowing with blood, guts, and growled threats. In it, we see that new protagonist James Hellar's revenge on the original star's Alex Mercer involves... spreading exactly the sort of carnage as Mercer did. Well, They do say we hate people who remind us of ourselves. Or who turn us into mutated monstrosities.
Prototype 2 is due out on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in 2012, published by Activision. Read more »
