While we can't have fun with the numbers the same way we used to, the NPD Group has released the October NPD listing in its new, 'slimmer' form.
Jumping ahead in the hardware space was the Nintendo DS, taking over after a four-month consecutive hold the Xbox 360 had in the United States. That doesn't mean things are shaky in Microsoft's camp as NPD Group analyst Anita Frazier says that "the Xbox 360 was the only platform to realize unit sales improvement over last October." Eurogamer spoke with Electronic Arts' Patrick Soderlund, charged with watching over the publisher's racing and shooting franchises, about the future of Need for Speed, Medal of Honor, Battlefield, and some other titles.
Let's talk about Need for Speed first. "My vision for NFS is it will be a brand the consumer can enjoy on an annual basis," said Soderlund. "He can look at that game and say, 'I know this is going to be a high quality entertainment experience.' That is a must for us." EA also doesn't want to get into a situation "where a developer had to make a game in eight to 10 months." Read more »

The war rages on in Medal of Honor, as EA has revealed the game's first premium downloadable content, set to launch alongside the previously revealed "Clean Sweep" mode.
"Hot Zone" is a King of the Hill-style mode where "teams fight over a designated location on a map." Priced at $10 (800MS Points), Hot Zone also adds two new maps (Hindukush Pass and Korengal Outpost) as well as two "redesigned" versions of existing maps from the game (Shahikot Valley and Helmand Valley) to the game's online experience. Medal of Honor will get a free downloadable add-on on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on November 2. It will be available to all players with the EA Online Pass included with new copies of the game or purchased separately.
The pack adds the new mode "Clean Sweep", which is briefly described as "an elimination mode where players must rely on their own skill and teammates' expertise to prevail as the winning team." It will be playable on four maps, including two new arenas: Bagram Hangar and Khyber Caves. The other two maps will be redesigned versions of Diwagal Camp and Kabul City Ruins. Read more »

Although EA was once the champion of the wartime console shooter when the original Medal of Honor launched in 1999, the publisher has slipped in rank over the last few years. In hopes of recapturing the market, EA has revived its aging Medal of Honor franchise for a new generation of gamers, featuring a new generation of combat heroes.
Rather than fabricate a modern war, developer Danger Close has decided to feature an ongoing conflict: the war in Afghanistan. As the game opens, sound bytes featuring the tragic terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, cycle through the speakers. As the camera pans and zooms over the globe, it freezes on the Middle East. In the new Medal of Honor you will square off against ruthless Taliban forces, holed up in the Afghan region. Read more »

Now that Electronic Arts has changed the name of the playable enemy forces in Medal of Honor's multiplayer, no longer directly referring to the US faction's opponent as the "Taliban," the game might possibly be allowed to return to stores on US military bases.
A representative of the Army and Air Force Exchange Service told Joystiq that it was "aware of reported changes to the latest Medal of Honor game" and that "the organization has been, and continues to be, engaged in a thorough review to fully understand the extent of the modifications. Read more »

After months of protest and controversy, Electronic Arts has announced it will rename the opposing army in the Medal of Honor multiplayer mode from 'Taliban' to 'Opposing Force.'
In a blog post this morning, Medal of Honor executive producer Greg Goodrich explained the decision was made for "the men and women serving in the military and for the families of those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice." Goodrich said the Medal of Honor franchise will "never willfully disrespect, intentionally or otherwise" the memory and service of the men and women in the armed service. Read more »
