Plants vs. Zombies 2 update ditches level keys, adds Gargantuars

Part of the free-to-play-isation of Plants vs. Zombies 2 was locking certain levels off behind gates, requiring players to farm keys (ho hah!) or give in and buy them. That's gone with the latest update, which turns the maps linear and opens up those previously-locked levels. It's not all rosy though, as Gargantuar zombies have been brought back to assault your lawn.

Plants vs Zombies 2 for iOS out now

Plants vs Zombies 2: It's About Time is finally out. For real. You can download it on the iOS App Store right now. In America, too.

After years of silence, the sequel was revealed as a free-to-play follow-up featuring time travel and brand new plants. Originally scheduled for release earlier this year, the game was suddenly delayed--and then "soft launched" in Australia and New Zealand to test the in-game economy. And now, it's out. For real. Seriously.

Plants vs Zombies 2 video shows off some new plants

Because it's a sequel, Plants vs Zombies 2: It's About Time needs to add new plants. While your winning strategy of cattail and pumpkins may still be effective in PopCap's new game, you'll still want to experiment with some of the new garden defenders.

Perhaps our favorite of the new plants is the chili bean, which causes zombies that eat it to die and fart, damaging any undead behind it. There's also the bonk choy, a short-ranged melee plant that pairs nicely with a wall-nut and oyster sauce.

Plants vs Zombies 2 delayed

Plants vs Zombies 2 delayed

"Plants vs. Zombies 2, originally slated for a July 18th release, will now be released later in the summer," the game's official Twitter announced. The reason for the delay? "Only because we want to make sure it's the best ever!"

Our John was quite fond of the game when he played it at E3. Not only that, the game recently was nominated for a Best of E3 award, so it's looking pretty sharp--even if it's suspiciously free-to-play.

Plants vs. Zombies 2 preview: it's about time (and money)

Developer PopCap Games can't be accused of throwing Plants vs. Zombies 2 together quickly just to capitalize on the popularity of the original. As expected, the subtitle It's About Time is not only about the exacerbated wait fans have had to suffer, but about the sequel's new time-traveling premise.

Crazy Dave returns, discovering a hot sauce that perfectly complements the taco in the original game. It was so good that he wants to eat it again, so he channels Back to the Future and invents a time machine so he can go back in time to do just that. Thus begins a new adventure.
