PlanetSide 2 embracing app developers

PlanetSide 2 embracing app developers

Some of the most admirable aspects of PlanetSide 2's ambitious massively multiplayer FPS world are its scale and persistence. With the battle taking place on maps larger than Call of Duty games, it's no surprise that players will want stay connected to the game--even when they're not playing it.

While most multiplayer communities offer web-based stat tracking, SOE promises to take it "a step further" with PlanetSide 2. Creative director Matt Higby told us at Game Developers Conference about their plans to open up the real-time data of the game. "We're real interested in seeing the state of battles that are occurring on the map at any given time, seeing their friends that are online and fighting, being able to see what region they're fighting in."

PlanetSide 2's free-to-play economy explained

Sony Online Entertainment's ambitious massively multiplayer FPS PlanetSide 2 will be free-to-play. But, how will SOE make money?

Microtransactions, of course! However, creative director Matt Higby reassured us that the game won't be "pay-to-win." At Game Developers Conference last week, Higby promised that "anything that affects gameplay, such as grenades or medkits or implants that give you additional power within the game, will be exclusively unlocked via [in-game] resources."

Planetside 2 trailer showcases evolution of the series, air combat, and more

A new clip for PlanetSide 2 outlines the evolution of the upcoming free-to-play shooter from Sony Online Entertainment, detailing how the new look was born out of the original title's vision. The clip is short and sadly low resolution, but boy does PlanetSide 2 look pretty. The video is a nice companion piece to an earlier clip released by the developer which detailed the story behind the game's three factions.

PlanetSide 2 is set to launch on the PC later this year. Beta registration for the title began in late December 2011.

PlanetSide 2 features 8x8 kilometer continents

Sony Online Entertainment's upcoming MMO-shooter sequel, PlanetSide 2, will apparently feature gigantic maps that are approximately 8x8 kilometers in size. Furthermore, the game's maps are being structured to support competitive shootouts between unbalanced teams. To get a better idea, it's possible to encounter a scenario where you and about twenty or so teammates try to defend a base against an onslaught of around 200 attackers.

PlanetSide 2 will be free to play

PlanetSide 2 will be free to play, SOE's John Smedley confirmed. This shouldn't be too surprising, given Sony Online Entertainment's admission that PlanetSide 2 was originally planned as a free-to-play update to the original game, before turning into a "full-fledged sequel."

"The game will be F2P. What form will it be? We're still working that out," Smedley said.

Planetside 2 was originally just a F2P update

Planetside 2 was originally just a F2P update

Long before Planetside 2 was officially announced, Sony Online Entertainment had been teasing "Planetside Next." Apparently, the long-in-development title was originally planned to be a free-to-play update to the original Planetside, with a graphical update to modernize it. A PC Gamer report from SOE Fan Faire reveals that "once the team started working on the project... they got so excited about its potential that they decided to scrap their plans and make a full-fledged sequel instead."

Had SOE stuck with their decision to make Planetside Next a F2P first person shooter, it would end up competing against games like Tribes: Ascend. Sony Computer Entertainment also experimented with a free-to-play trial with their own massively multiplayer FPS, MAG. Read more »
