IGF 2014 award finalists announced

The Independent Games Festival has revealed the finalists for this year's awards, to be recognized during March's Game Developers Conference. The six games up for the Seumas McNally Grand Prize include a number of indie titles that have been mentioned in Game of the Year conversations, including Galactic Cafe's The Stanley Parable, Klei's Don't Starve, and Lucas Pope's Papers, Please.

Steam controller shown in action

Steam controller shown in action

We've seen the promo shots of the Steam controller and heard generally positive reactions from indie developers, but we haven't yet seen it in action. That changed today, with a demonstration video that shows the prototype being used to control games ranging from the generally console-friendly shooters to more PC-centric titles.

How minimal game design helps tell stories in Papers, Please

The premise for Papers, Please is rather dark: turn away poor, destitute people at your border if they don't have the right papers. And if they appear suspicious or undesirable, turn them away using more nefarious tactics. But if you're creator Lucas Pope, much of the game's heavy subject matter is alleviated thanks to its minimalist game design.

Papers, Please approved to launch next week

If office workers unwind after a day of pushing papers by playing farming or trucking simulators, what can farmers and truckers play? Border control sim Papers, Please is coming to their rescue, leaving beta and properly launching for PC and Mac on August 8. It'll cost a reasonable $9.99.

Papers, Please stamped by Greenlight as approvals gather steam

As lovely as Steam is, it's a terrible shame that so many people apparently refuse to buy games not on Valve's digital distribution platform. Steam Greenlight has helped much-desired games get attention and onto Steam, but it's moved quite slowly until now. Valve yesterday approved another three Greenlight games for Steam, and says it plans to do smaller, more frequent batches going forward.
