NSMB U and Luigi replace Nintendoland in new Wii U Deluxe bundle

NSMB U and Luigi replace Nintendoland in new Wii U Deluxe bundle

Nintendo is jazzing up the Wii U Deluxe bundle (that's the 32GB model), replacing the pack-in game Nintendoland with New Super Mario Bros. U plus its New Super Luigi U downloadable content. As that's one of the Wii U's must-buy games, hey, this switch will save you a fair chunk of change even if the price is still $299.99.

Nintendo Land could have featured Star Fox, Excitebite, 1080 Snowboarding games

Nintendo Land includes a number of mini-games, all branded with classic Nintendo IPs. However, not every game properly represented the IP it donned. Nintendo's Takayuki Shimamura, who served as co-director on the title, admitted that "some of the tie-ins, like Donkey Kong and Octopus, might be stretching it a little."

Nintendo Land review: not-so-magical kingdom

Nintendo Land is being positioned as the company's flagship game for the Wii U console, much like Wii Sports was for the original Wii. Unfortunately, this mini-game compilation falls short of that ambitious goal. Not only do many of the games fail to prove why the GamePad is innovative, but many of the included activities commit gaming's ultimate sin--they're not fun.

Nintendo Land is serving as the Wii U equivalent of Wii Sports, the pack-in that is meant to illustrate the strengths of the unique control device. We've known about most of the franchise-themed mini-games for a while, but today Nintendo detailed the last three. Yoshi's Fruit Cart, Captain Falcon's Twister Race, and Octopus Dance all focus on single-player experiences.

Nintendo Land: previews of Pikmin Adventure and Metroid Blast

Although we had a chance to play Nintendo Land at E3, there wasn't much to say about it. It was a straightforward collection of mini-games, after all. However, two of the "attractions" introduced during yesterday's Nintendo press conference showed off much more depth we'd seen previously. Pikmin Adventure, for example, looks like a fully-fledged Pikmin game. At a glance, Metroid Blast also looks like a rather complex third-person shooter.

Nintendo undecided on making Nintendo Land a Wii U pack-in

At the conclusion of Nintendo's E3 press conference, many had concluded that Nintendo Land would be bundled with the Wii U, not unlike Wii Sports was included with Nintendo's last-gen console. As a collection of mini-games, it certainly seems analogous. Katsuya Eguchi, producer of the game, agrees that the comparison is fair, but admits that he doesn't know what the plan is.

"If you think of Wii U and Nintendo Land as having the same relationship as Wii Sports and Wii--the concept is sort of similar, so you may be able to imagine the scenario."
