A new Wii "Holiday Bundle" is hitting retail stores on October 23rd. The bundle includes a black Wii system, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, and an "exclusive" music CD featuring tunes from Super Mario Galaxy. In addition, it includes a Wii Remote Plus controller and Nunchuck for $149.99. The standard Wii bundle, which includes Mario Kart Wii and wheel attachment, will continue to be available for the same price.

Although some companies achieved sales milestones in 2010, including Activision's Call of Duty: Black Ops and Microsoft's Xbox 360 console, sales throughout the industry were down "as much as 1 percent when compared to 2009," the NPD Group estimates.
Data is still preliminary for "total consumer spend on gaming content via all monetization methods, including new physical video and PC games, used games, game rentals, subscriptions, digital full-game downloads, social network games, downloadable content, and mobile game apps," however, the market research company puts complete spending between $15.4 and $15.6 billion. As part of its celebrations for the 25th anniversary of Mario Mario's debut appearance in Super Mario Bros., Nintendo has announced special red editions of the Wii and DSi XL.

Last month, the Xbox 360 sold more hardware than any other system for the first time since 2007. Microsoft managed to pull it off again posting a second straight month of topping the hardware sales, though overall sales were down month to month. The PlayStation 3 was the only console to show gains versus the prior month, but has still not returned to its June sales of 304.8K units. The Wii posted its lowest hardware sales since launch.

Continuing today's smorgasbord of announcements and revelations, market research firm The NPD Group has pulled back the curtain on its monthly report, revealing January 2010's top-selling console games and hardware figures for the United States.
In all, the overall U.S. video game market was down 13%, pulling in $1.17 billion compared to January 2009's $1.34B. Across the various segments, hardware saw the biggest drop, coming in at $353.7M--down 32% over January 2009's $446.8M. Read more »

Kicking off new year with self-congratulatory press release, Nintendo began today by listing off some of its accomplishments in 2009, such as its estimate that the Nintendo DS "set a new all-time calendar-year U.S. sales record for any console or hand-held."
The company further boasted that the Nintendo DS represents the "best selling videogame console" in European history with over 40 million sold across five years, with the Wii having sold just over 20 million in the territory across three years. Read more »

Nintendo has recently launched a rather heart-warming campaign to bring generations together around the Wii this holiday season. Representatives from Nintendo began visiting ten different Erickson and Leisure Care Communities on December 4th to introduce its growing crop of Wii-playing seniors and their family members to New Super Mario Bros. Wii in an effort to "encourage every generation to sample the game's unique blend of imaginative, multiplayer fun."
Special Nintendo gift packages were also shipped to an additional 42 retirement communities which Nintendo hopes will "incorporate video games into their regular activities." It's not the first time that Nintendo has launched this type of promotional effort, and games like Wii Sports have already met with a positive reception among many seniors. Read more »

The comic mischief of propeller hats, penguin suits and the other new features of New Super Mario Bros. Wii--especially multiplayer--are on display in this rather calm launch trailer for Nintendo's latest platformer, which hit North American shops yesterday.
Be forewarned though, as while the trailer suggests that multiplayer is a serene experience, it leaves out the swearing and the shouting that comes from bringing three more players into the mix, especially when someone steals yet another power-up. Read more »
