Need for Speed movie being considered by Hollywood studios

Movie studios and video game publishers are still looking for a way to profit off of some cross-media synergy. According to a new report, Electronic Arts has been shopping one of its more recognizable franchises for a Hollywood adaptation: Need for Speed.

A movie adaptation of the game would be able to compete with Universal's still-popular Fast and the Furious series. Paramount is supposedly the frontrunner in the bid, but all major studios minus Universal.

Need for Speed: The Run Limited Edition announced

Need for Speed: The Run will be getting its own Limited Edition, which includes three cars and five exclusive challenges. For you gear-heads, the cars include the Lamborghini Aventador, Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, and the Porche 911 Carrera S. Notably, the press release explicitly calls the challenges exclusive, but not the cars, so non-LE buyers may get a chance behind the wheels of those rides.

Need for Speed The Run gets back in the car

Need for Speed The Run gets back in the car

I walked, nay, ran from Need for Speed The Run unimpressed at E3. EA was trying something new with the franchise, promising a story that will get you out of the car with action-packed QTE-ridden sequences.

It wasn't very good. And worst of all, the driving wasn't much fun either. One month later, EA returns to show off more of The Run. This time, I'm driving through the Nevada desert, with an EA rep saying that the on-foot portion of the game makes up only ten percent of the package. I could only think "this is more like it" as I was handed the controller, keys to a nitrous-filled sports car, racing against opponents through the desert.

E3 2011: Need for Speed The Run

QUICKTAKE: I have to credit EA for trying something new with Need for Speed The Run. No one will be able to criticize it as being another cookie-cutter sequel in the long-running franchise. Still, EA appears to have missed the mark with its narrative-heavy twist to the series.

Need for Speed The Run revealed: you run

Need for Speed The Run revealed: you run

Electronic Arts was somewhat vague about Need for Speed The Run when it announced the game back in April, leaving us to imagine yet another game simply of driving fast cars. Turns out, it's a bit more complicated than that.

Five minutes of Black Box's racer was demonstrated at E3 yesterday and, it turns out that, as well as driving on cars, you'll also be running on foot. Hence the name. In retrospect, it's obvious. Read more »

Need for Speed: The Run announced for November

Need for Speed: The Run announced for November

Hot on the heels of spin-off Shift 2 Unleashed, EA has announced another new entry in the Need for Speed franchise set to hit this year, titled Need for Speed: The Run. It's being developed by EA Black Box, and uses the Frostbite 2 engine usually reserved for the company's shooters. The game also brings back the popular Autolog feature, which is becoming a mainstay of EA racing titles. The announcement promises varied environments, like urban traffic, icy mountains, and narrow canyons.

It's set for a release on November 15 in North America and November 17 in Europe, and it will hit the PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, and 3DS. EA hasn't shown off any gameplay yet, but did release a cinematic teaser-trailer. It features cars going fast, as one might expect, and potential death by speeding train, which is probably less expected. Read more »
