Best of 2010 Awards: Sports

Sports: NBA 2K11

Yearly sports game franchises often get accused of being little more than roster updates coupled with some subtle are often so inconsequential, all but the most rabid fans would be hard-pressed to notice. In 2010, NBA 2K11 managed to handily buck this trend, giving gamers a great reason to keep this year's entry in their gaming libraries long after the 2011 season is over. That reason is Michael Jordon. His host of "Jordan Challenges" allow players to replay some of MJ's most legendary performances, or even rebuild his career from scratch. Read more »

Sorry revolutionists, you're going to have to wait a little longer until you can escape underground and decimate its thriving civilization.

In an investor release, THQ revealed Red Faction: Armageddon has been pushed to May 2011. Originally the shooter was scheduled to arrive in March 2011. No specifics for the delay were mentioned; however, we suspect it has something to do with THQ core game VP Danny Bilson's "ship when things are ready" policy. Read more »

July NPD: Xbox 360 Leads all Platforms for First Time Since Sept. '07, NCAA Football Tops Consoles

The NPD Group have released sales date for the month of July, revealing the Xbox 360 has taken over the top spot versus all video game platforms. The last time the Xbox 360 led all platforms was in September 2007, following the release of Halo 3.

Although video game retail sales were slightly lower over July 2009, one major standout was StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty, which sold 721K units during the month. The release was a major contributing factor to the 103% growth the PC category saw versus last year. (The game does not appear on the NPD list, as NPD only tracks console sales.) Read more »

NCAA Football 11 Review

To many, self included, NCAA Football served as a summer tune-up and tide-me-over for Madden; that is, until this year. NCAA Football 11 pays off on the cumulative effort EA Sports put into refining the game on and off the field. It won't be mistaken for Madden junior any more than Texas/OU, Auburn/Georgia, or any other college game broadcast would be for an NFL game.

At the top level, it captures the nervous, up-tempo pace of play. That's not just the no-huddle offence, though the much-improved flexibility to make adjustments at the line allows drives that flow up and down the field with hardly a break. It also comes from how the players move. Quarterbacks tuck and lean as they try to get around the end on an option; halfbacks stumble and slither through tacklers, and sometimes guys just plain get beat; they're not pros. Read more »

Syfy is producing a 2-hour TV movie based upon the franchise, which will also serve as a pilot for a potential series. "We will sell it to the fans, it will have content you can download that is TV show-related," explains Bilson. "It will build up to the new game and also we can use it to drive pre-orders, too."
