Midway released the original coin-op NBA Jam into arcades back in 1993, treating players to frantically-paced games of 2-on-2 basketball. Over-the-top commentary, cartoonish representations of the day's top round ball superstars, and hilariously in-your-face slam-dunks gave the matches their unmistakable style. Seventeen years later, EA Canada has taken up the NBA Jam mantle in an attempt to recapture the shoulder-to-shoulder trash talking and "boomshakalaking" that so many of us enjoyed in the arcades of yore.

The PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of the new NBA Jam were originally intended to be a small sampling of the full game, which was to be included with NBA Elite 11 as a voucher for the download. The real game was a Wii exclusive title.
Now that NBA Elite 11 has been delayed indefinitely, EA will be releasing standalone versions of NBA Jam to the PS3 and 360, but will take some time to add "as much on there as possible," as explained by NBA Jam creative director Trey Smith (via Kotaku). Read more »

QUICK TAKE: It's a little on the ugly side -- even for a Wii game -- but NBA Jam has all the fantastic arcade excitement of the original games coupled with some fun motion controls. The game also features NBA legend Detlef Schrempf...as well as Earvin "Magic" Johnson, Larry Bird, Dennis Rodman, James Worthy, Hakeem Olajuwon, Clyde Drexler, and Kevin McHale.
While most sports games have been upping the level of reality and real-world production values, NBA Jam for Wii is bringing back some classic arcade excitement. This two-on-two basketball title features all the fun of the arcade original -- crazy dunks, ridiculous blocks, breakneck pace, etc. -- and combines it with the Wii's motion controls. The end result is a super enjoyable time that's great for gamers of all skill levels. NBA Jam is one of those rare sports titles that's fun for people that aren't fans of the real sport. Read more »
