Insane Revealed as a Trilogy; Guillermo del Toro Acting as External Creative Director

After being teased for months, director Guillermo del Toro took the stage during the 2010 Spike VGAs to reveal his newest creation: a game with THQ, titled Insane.

Described as a "Lovecraftian" horror title, Insane will be "an original trilogy of triple-A games" from developer Volition, Inc. (Saint's Row 2, Red Faction: Guerrilla), with the Hollywood filmmaker acting as the external creative director on the series. Read more »

Borderlands GOTY Edition Grants Early Access to Eventual Duke Nukem Forever Demo

2K Games and Gearbox have revealed that purchasing the Game of the Year edition of Borderlands will give players exclusive access to the "Duke Nukem Forever First Access Club," in addition to some exclusive in-game items...in other words, early access to the DNF demo.

As expected, the Borderlands Game of the Year Edition will include the all four downloadable episodes from the "extravasplosive Borderlands catalog," but will also come with a "free membership certificate for the Duke Nukem Forever First Access Club." In addition to the playable demo of Duke Nukem Forever, the First Access Club membership will also give players access to an as-of-yet-undisclosed "wealth of goodies." Read more »

Talking Duke Nukem Forever With Gearbox Software's Steve Gibson

Shacknews founder Steve Gibson spent plenty of time covering Duke Nukem Forever over the years. His move to Gearbox Software now puts him working for the very developer that hopes to finally finish the game. Seeing both sides firsthand gives him a unique perspective on the story. So I sat down with him at PAX to see how he feels about becoming part of the game's saga and how Gearbox plans to make Duke Nukem Forever a success.

Duke Nukem Now Owned by New DNF Dev Gearbox

Gearbox Software has announced that as well as being the developer helming the revival of Duke Nukem Forever, it is also the proud owner of the testosterone-gushing property.

The Borderlands developer explains that it "has acquired the full intellectual property rights of the 'Duke Nukem' brand including Duke Nukem Forever and all future projects in a cooperative deal made with 3D Realms." Read more »

Duke Nukem Forever Hands-on Preview

I can't believe I just wrote that headline. I have played Duke Nukem Forever. Announced (again) here at PAX 2010, development will be finished by Gearbox. The game will be released on the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 sometime in 2011. Let's just right into things.

First off, the good news. This game is Duke. The action is fast-paced, the one-liners are great, and Jon St. John sounds great. In true Duke fashion, the humor is very self-aware, with Duke even joking about the game's legendary development time in game. The weapons all feel great--especially the shotgun--and a sprint button helps bring the gameplay into this decade. Read more »

More Duke Nukem Forever Footage Surfaces via Unofficial Fan-Made Video

Though the fate of Duke Nukem Forever is contingent upon legal matters that aren't expected to go to trial for at least another year, another fan-made compilation of leaked gameplay footage has been unearthed by the various denizens of the internet.

Initially uploaded to YouTube in December 2009, the unofficial montage went largely ignored until April Fools Day 2010--the day the legendary shooter was once scheduled to go gold--when some tried to pass the video off as a 3D Realms-sanctioned update. It's not. What you see below consists of various snippets of leaked gameplay footage, some of which you might have seen before and some of which you probably haven't. Read more »

Duke Nukem Forever Once Scheduled to Go Gold on April Fools' Day (No Joke)

Had everything gone according to plan, 3D Realms' long-coming (and now legally-troubled) shooter Duke Nukem Forever was meant to have gone gold--meaning it would have been complete and off to manufacturing--on April Fools' Day 2010.

"By the 3DR/TTWO development schedule, April 1st, 2010 was supposed to be the day Duke Nukem Forever went gold," Shacknews alum and former DNF producer Jason Bergman revealed via Read more »

More Duke Nukem Forever Footage Leaks?

As 3D Realms and Take-Two continue to duke it out in court, it seems that even more Duke Nukem Forever footage has somehow made its way to the internet, apparently starting out on YouTube before moving on to PCGames.de and ending up here.

But before we get to the video, a cautionary word. The following is not an official trailer. It contains footage from a variety of sources, including the debut trailer from 1998 at one point. As for the Gearbox logo at the beginning, it's anyone's guess. As far as we know, Gearbox wasn't / isn't involved with Duke Nukem Forever, but was readying an all new-entry, Duke Begins, that has since been halted but not canceled. Read more »

3DR Teases 'Numerous' Duke Nukem Games, 'Looking to Bring Duke into Casual Gaming'

While it's been a rather tumultuous year for Duke Nukem series handler 3D Realms--the company laid off its internal development team in May, leading to a messy legal feud with publisher Take-Two over Duke Nukem Forever--CEO Scott Miller still envisions a bright future for the ass-kicking, gum-lacking action hero.

"The next few years should see a strong resurgence in Duke," Miller states in the first printed issue of Gamesauce. "There are numerous other Duke games in various stages of development, several due out this year. We are definitely looking to bring Duke into casual gaming spaces, plus there are other major Duke games in production." Read more »

Duke Nukem 'D-Day' Teased with Screenshot

Duke Nukem's official Facebook page has been updated with a screenshot for something called "D-Day," with the action hero himself teasing that he "doesn't stay down for long."

It remains to be seen exactly what D-Day is, whether it be a a new game, the build-up to an announcement or revelation, or something else entirely. The stadium and enemy might seem familiar from the Duke Nukem Forever footage leaked in May, though those were callbacks to Duke's earlier adventures. Read more »
