Minecraft unofficial 'World Explorer' mobile app free

Attention mobile Minecrafters! Developer Robots and Pencils has elected to make the iOS version of its World Explorer mobile app free for a limited time. Provided that it doesn't bother you that the app isn't officially sanctioned by Mojang Specifications, World Explorer will allow you to import your entire worlds from Minecraft and continue to build and explore from the palm of your hand.

Official LEGO Minecraft sets in the works

Back in December, Minecraft developer Mojang Specifications began an initiative to drum up enough support to warrant the creation of official Minecraft LEGO sets. Today, LEGO Cuusoo--the entity responsible for hearing and assessing such requests--announced that LEGO Minecraft has been approved by the LEGO Review committee.

Minecraft XBLA may speed update process

Minecraft's release on Xbox Live Arcade might speed up the patch approval process, in an effort to help it catch up with the PC release. The chief technology officer for 4J Studios, the developer behind the XBLA port, says that it could be the first game on the service to feature constant updates.

"I think we might be the first to do constant updates," 4J's Paddy Burns said.

Minecraft hits 20M registered users

Minecraft developer Mojang Specifications popped a cork on a new milestone over the weekend. Creator Markus "Notch" Persson announced that the game has hit 20 million registered users. The number would be big for any developer, but seems doubly impressive from a previously unknown indie studio.

Mojang currently working on three unannounced games

In addition to Scrolls, continuing support for Minecraft, and an Xbox 360 port, Mojang Specifications is apparently working on three more unannounced projects. Two of those projects are set to be announced, and possibly even released, in the first half of 2012.

Mojang wants Minecraft Pocket to improve organically

Minecraft spent years on the PC slowly evolving and adding features to its current state. When Mojang Specifications released Minecraft Pocket, it was more akin to the early days of the game than a sign of all the progress since. Business developer Daniel Kaplan isn't sure how the mobile version will evolve, but says the goal isn't to make it a direct copy of the PC version.

Minecraft review

Minecraft moves at its own steady, meticulous pace. Developer Mojang Specification's breakthrough hit is ostensibly a building game, with a survival twist. Aside from contending with the occasional monster and newly added final boss, my ultimate goal for the purposes of this review was to create, and live long enough to appreciate what I had introduced into my world.

Taking a structure from concept to execution is slow, and it can be tedious. Utilizing time during the game's twenty minute day and night cycle to obtain resources for future use can feel more like work than a video game. Minecraft can be frustrating in this regard; however, like real-world physical work, the fruits of my labor were the ultimate reward.

Minecraft toying with official LEGO sets

From blocks it came, and from blocks it may return. Minecraft developer Mojang is playing with ideas for official LEGO sets based upon the indie dig 'em up, vowing to donate royalties to charity.

Mojang is raising support through LEGO's crowd-sourcing site Cuusoo, which lets users share their ideas for official sets. Projects which gain enough support are reviewed by LEGO to see if they're up to becoming official sets.

Notch steps down as Minecraft lead developer

Minecraft creator Markus 'Notch' Persson has stepped down as lead developer on the indie dig 'em up yesterday, replaced by Mojang cohort Jens Bergensten. "He will have the final say in all design decisions, so he will kinda sorta become my boss, I guess," Mojang founder Persson joked. "I've promised him to not pull rank."

Creator Markus 'Notch' Persson was joined on stage in Vegas by folks from developer Mojang, Microsoft, the Minecraft community, Mega64, and more, as he prepared to flip the big "Activate Minecraft" switch during the keynote event on Friday.
