Although they will no longer provide any of those pesky "numbers" we all like so much, the NPD Group has released its report for the month of September. As Microsoft announced earlier, Halo: Reach topped the charts, selling 3.3 million units in its first month of sale.
Capcom's Dead Rising 2 took the third spot across three platforms, despite launching on September 28 in North America. EA Sports saw three of its titles land in September's top ten, with Madden NFL 11, NHL 11, and FIFA Soccer 11 invading the month's top five sellers. New exclusive titles Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep for the PSP and Nintendo Wii's Metroid: Other M also had strong debuts. Note: The NPD Group no longer lists software as individual platforms. Sales for all platforms will now be combined when listed in the "Top Ten" and no figures will be released to the public from the NPD Group. Read more »

Nintendo has outlined the cause and effect of a game-breaking bug affecting a segment of Metroid: Other M players and how they can avoid or remedy the situation.
The bug takes place in the game's third sector (aka the lava section) after squaring off a room of spiked enemies with purple legs. If, in this section, users decide to backtrack towards the area where the Ice Beam is obtained, a door that is supposed to unlock remains closed and will not allow players to continue through Samus' latest adventure. To avoid the issue, Nintendo recommends going through the door immediately after defeating the enemies and do any desired backtracking at a later time. Read more »

Few would argue that, between its other major franchises like Mario and Zelda, Nintendo is extremely comfortable changing the Metroid formula around. In 2002, Retro Studios took the classic series into first-person territory, much to the initial dismay of the franchise's loyalists. To this day, Metroid: Prime stands as one of the best titles in the franchise.
When Nintendo revealed Ninja Gaiden developer Team Ninja would take over and, once again, change Samus Aran's world, I was a little worried. As a huge fan of the franchise, I decided to purposfully avoid the game at every major show, promising to only play the finished product. Read more »

Metroid: Other M is an interesting test in game design. The title uses only the Wii Remote, held sideways like a NES controller, to control Samus in third-person. This is mixed with a first-person aiming mechanic using the Remote's infrared sensor.
As such, the level design is largely presented as 2D, despite being a 3D space. There is a large amount of auto-aim, putting the focus on dodging and firing back at enemies. Ninja Gaiden series veteran Team Ninja, co-developing the title with Nintendo, is the driving force behind the combat. Players will be able to dodge attacks as well as initiate flashy cinematic finishing moves on certain enemies. Read more »

Correction: The intercut sequences from Super Metroid were included for Sakamoto's presentation and are not actually in the game. The editing was meant to show the recreation in CG, but the scene is a retelling of the end of Super Metroid.
Shown to attendees of GDC 2010, Metroid co-creator Yoshio Sakamoto showed an intro cinematic from Metroid: Other M, which takes place after the events of the Super Nintendo's Super Metroid and the Game Boy Advance's Metroid Fusion. Read more »
