The free release of MechWarrior 4 and its expansions has finally gained a thumbs-up from publisher Microsoft's legal team and is cleared for launch, its distributor-to-be MekTek has declared, over nine months after the release was originally announced.

The planned free release of MechWarrior 4 and its expansions is apparently still coming but has been held up for unknown reasons by its original publisher Microsoft according MekTek, the MW4 modding team who'll distribute the mech combat sim.

"It would seem that the Free Release is held up at Microsoft and it is unknown to us and our Studio when the Free Release will be given the final go ahead," MekTek writes. Read more »

Community site MekTek.net today announced that MechWarrior rights owner Smith & Tinker has given the site permission to distribute MechWarrior 4 and all of its expansions for free.

The release will mark the 25th anniversay of Battletech, and the announcement of a new MechWarrior game in development at Piranha Games. Read more »
