Today, PS3 owners will be able to get their hands on a long-awaited port: the original Mass Effect. After years of being exclusive to Xbox 360 and PC, the port can be purchased as part of the Mass Effect Trilogy at retail, or as a standalone $15 download on the PlayStation Store.
We had a quick test of the retail version of the game, just to see how the Edge of Reality-developed port stands up.

Some people missed the boat on this whole "Mass Effect" thing, and were forced to watch passively from the sidelines as adulation turned to ending-based scorn. If you'd like to give it a whirl and don't mind being late to the party, you can wait until November 6 when BioWare releases all three games in one box.

The Mass Effect games have provided quite a bit of entertainment--and drama--for fans since 2007 when the first title launched, following the exploits of Commander Shepard and his team. The series has also spawned four books and several comics, as well as a number of mobile spin-offs. Now, it has inspired a fan film entitled Red Sand, starring the actor who voiced male Shepard in the series.
Shacknews had the chance to talk with producer Paul DeNigris, director Caleb Evans and the film's star, Mark Meer, about the project.

Mass Effect is getting a film treatment, and a few of the additional details have slipped out. Following Comic-Con, Legendary Pictures held a fan Q&A which has revealed that the movie will, unsurprisingly, feature the male version of Shepard. When asked if the movie will be a trilogy, the production team simply responded: "We are really focused on making this a great movie, so we'll see where it takes us. We have to get the first one right to know whether there will be more."

The Mass Effect series is already pretty cinematic, but it's about to get even more so. BioWare and Electronic Arts announced a deal with FUNimation Entertainment today, to produce a Mass Effect anime movie. Work on the movie has already begun, and it's due in stores (not theaters) in summer of 2012. T.O Entertainment, which is also handling the Dragon Age anime, has signed on as co-producer.
The movie will take place within the Mass Effect universe, but the annoucment doesn't mention the series protagonist Shepard. More likely, this movie will expand the universe like the series of Drew Karpyshyn-penned novels, or the movies EA has financed to cross-promote Dead Space and Dante's Inferno. Read more »

A job posting (seen left) on LinkedIn (via GameBlend) calls for a "Multiplayer Programmer (Mass Effect Franchise)" at BioWare Montreal. It seems to suggest that multiplayer and/or co-op play might be coming to Mass Effect 3 or an entirely new project in the series:
"Multiplayer Programmers ensure the game engine and game systems work reliably and efficiently in a multiplayer environment. They work with both the front and back ends to take existing single player user experiences and make them multiplayer safe." Read more »

Though Mass Effect was announced as an "epic trilogy," developer BioWare has confirmed that the futuristic franchise will continue after the third entry.
"We're actually going to continue to use [the Mass Effect universe] for stuff and we're going to continue to make games there," BioWare co-founder Greg Zeschuk told Kotaku, adding "we have our work cut out for us for the next little while getting Mass Effect 3 done after this" and "if you love Mass Effect, there will be more Mass Effect in the future." After the exhausting effort that went into developing Mass Effect 2 it would be reasonable to expect the team was ready for a break. Not BioWare, or at least not Project Director Casey Hudson. Speaking to the press before showing off the game at a recent event in Edmonton Hudson said, "We're looking forward to it [Mass Effect 3] and it should be more fun for us."
