Capcom revealed its earnings for fiscal year 2011, which ended on March 31, and unlike last year it's good news for the company. Net sales increased 46.2% to 97.7 billion yen ($1.2 billion). Operating income was up 155.8%, and ordinary income was up 132.6%. Net income increased to 7.7 billion yen ($95 million), up a whopping 257.6% from the prior year. The company says this marks record net sales, operating income, ordinary income, and net income.
Monster Hunter Freedom 3 was credited for a large part of the profits, which shipped more than 4.6 million units and became the fastest-selling PSP game. In alternative revenue streams, the company said the online title Monster Hunter Frontier Online showed "solid performance," and the Facebook and iOS social game Smurfs Village had a surprising level of downloads. In "old Shack" we would use the Weekend Discussion post as a platform for the editors at Shacknews to discuss what games they would be enjoying over the weekend. As outlined in this Chatty post, that doesn't really work with the new format.
What we've decided to do is to bring the conversation here, to a frontpage post. This allows us to highlight Chatty on the frontpage as it was in the past and--with the link between comments on the frontpage and in Chatty--give our users a place to share their current gaming experiences. A decade has passed since the last time select Marvel heroes and villains squared off against a smattering of Capcom's stable of characters. Since the 2000 release of Marvel vs. Capcom 2, the fighting game genre has had time to crash and climb back into a new Renaissance of popularity--thanks in large part to Capcom's devotion to the genre.
After years of endless cries for a sequel and combo-juggling its way through licensing issues, Capcom has delivered Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds to gamers on the Xbox 360 and PS3. Read more »

With Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds due to launch for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 next week, developer and publisher Capcom has unveiled the final boss.
Which Marvel or Capcom figure could cap off a cross-over of such epic proportions? Could it be Ramon Salazar from Resident Evil 4, or perhaps The Red Ghost and his Super-Apes? While Capcom has no qualms about blurting this information out, we'll at least do you the courtesy of concealing it below. Read more »

Capcom has announced a new mode will make its way into Marvel vs. Capcom 3 in the form of downloadable content. Squaring players off against "custom-built" teams modeled after the gameplay style of "famous players," the mode will be released in a series of downloadable packs, each containing three unique teams.
The feature--dubbed 'Shadow Mode'--utilizes the "programmed special techniques and preferences" of hardcore fighting game junkies to deliver, what we can only assume, are embarassing losses to add to your offline MvC3 record. The A.I. personality DLC will launch with a set derived from the gameplay stylings of MvC3 producer Ryota Niitsuma, assistant producer Akihito Kadowaki and an unnamed QA team leader. Read more »

2011 is shaping up to be a great year for video games. Here at Shacknews we've pored over the treasure trove of titles coming this year and each picked out a select few games to highlight. Today, it's Xav's turn to share the games he's especially anticipating.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim: After years of waiting, it's finally happening: Bethesda is continuing the Elder Scrolls series. I've been a fan of the franchise since before the age of Morrowind, so it comes as no surprise that my most anticipated title of the year is the fifth game in the series. My enthusiasm for the game isn't just blind fanboyism either. Bethesda promises a bevy of fixes, which includes a (desperately needed) new engine. Read more »

Marvel's assassin-for-hire and the evil brother of Ryu's mentor in Capcom's Street Fighter franchise are sneaking their way onto the Marvel vs. Capcom 3 roster.
Revealed in video form today by IGN, the decription for Akuma reveals that the character will be added as a hidden character in the game. There is no mention of how Taskmaster fits into the roster, other than the fact that he will bring his move-copying skills into the battlefield when squaring-off against the rest of the MvC3 roster.
