Limbo dev investigating iOS, Android ports

Playdead, developers of Limbo, are looking for a programmer to create ports for "new platforms." Given Playdead has only shipped one game so far, it seems likely that the Danish studio is exploring the possibility of making mobile ports of its award-winning black and white platformer.

"We have already released a game on X360, PS3, Windows, OSX and OnLive and we are continuously investigating other possible platforms," the job listing details. "Your job is primarily porting to new platforms and secondarily maintaining current platforms."

Limbo sells a million, coming to Mac

Limbo sells a million, coming to Mac

Artistic black and white platformer Limbo has sold a million copies worldwide, developer Playdead has announced. Originally released on Xbox 360 in July 2010, the game eventually made its way to PS3 and PC.

The success of Limbo has helped the studio buy back its independence, and help fund its upcoming game--a title which the studio says won't be ready for at least three years. "We are grateful to everyone who supported us over the past few years, and look forward to forging new partnerships that will both let us reach new heights as a studio and give our director, Arnt Jensen, room to grow creatively," Dino Patti, Playdead CEO said.

Limbo dev Playdead buys itself back from investors

Having sold shares in itself to fund Limbo, developer Playdead has now been able to buy itself back, after the acclaimed goth puzzle-platformer went on to the top of the XBLA charts.

Playdead started off funding Limbo itself, also picking up a grant from the Nordic Game Program, but ambitions exceeded cash reserves and it ended up needing help from investors too.

That didn't take long. Just one week after the ports were announced, Playdead has announced release dates for the upcoming PS3 and PC versions of Limbo. A European release will follow on July 20th. (A Japanese release is TBA.)

PC gamers will have to wait just a little bit longer, with a worldwide launch on Steam on August 2nd. Dino Patti, CEO of Playdead, told me that these upcoming ports will feature a "little extra secret." What could it be? Read more »

Limbo rated for PS3 in Asia

Playdead's well-reviewed moody Xbox Live hit, Limbo, may be coming to PS3. GameSetWatch has discovered a listing for a PS3 version of the game on the Korean Rating Board. Unsurprisingly, the game received a Mature rating. More surprising is the publisher attached to the port: Sony Computer Entertainment Korea. (Microsoft published the Xbox 360 version of the game.)

This isn't the first time a PS3 version of Limbo appeared on a ratings board. Last year, the ESRB rated Limbo for both PS3 and PC, which the developer claimed was simply a mistake. Read more »

Best of 2010 Awards: Indie

Indie: LIMBO

2010 was a fantastic year for independently developed games, with many of the category's front-runners providing some of year's most memorable experiences. The black and white, melancholic platformer LIMBO has been lazily described as "the Braid of 2010," but beyond the fact that both are puzzle-platformers, they're really different beasts. Whereas Braid engaged players with colorful worlds and an intellectually engaging and text-driven story, LIMBO engages the player on a more visceral level, burying its incredibly subtle (but creepy) meta-story underneath minute-to-minute action that is equal parts foreboding, pulse-pounding, and head-scratching.
