Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII preview: time for change

Square Enix has been oft criticized for its abundance of Final Fantasy games. However, even as we reach the third Final Fantasy XIII game, it's clear that the company never rests on its laurels. Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII is a radical departure from the previous two games in the Fabula Nova Crystallis series. In fact, by moving to a new "Amazing ATB" battle system, Lightning Returns may represent the boldest change for a mainline Final Fantasy game ever.

Why Lightning Returns isn't called 'Final Fantasy XIII-3'

Fans that have followed the franchise know that Final Fantasy is no stranger to odd titles. Heck, it's called Final Fantasy after all. Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII ends trilogy, coming 2013

As expected, Final Fantasy XIII-2 is getting a sequel. But it's not called Final Fantasy XIII-3. Nope. Today, Square Enix announced the end of this unexpected trilogy with Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII.

Coming in 2013 to PS3 and Xbox 360, Lightning Returns will conclude Lightning's saga--something we expected after the "to be continued" ending offered in the previous game. Once again, the game promises to evolve the series, adding more dynamic character control, letting you duck for cover and move your character while in combat.
