The Last Guardian director says 'creative work' is 'mostly finished'

Perhaps one of the biggest disappointments of the PS3 generation is the tumultuous development of The Last Guardian, the long-awaited follow-up to Ico and Shadow of the Colossus. The game is currently being "re-engineered," with director Fumito Ueda stepping down as full-time Sony employee and going freelance.

"When I worked at SCE, I was on an annual contract, so it was not as much of a change as those around me might think," Ueda said. However, he says that now that he is able to work on "secret" things beyond The Last Guardian.

The Last Guardian being 're-engineered'

The Last Guardian was primed to be a swan song for PS3, but it's gone quiet so long that PlayStation 4 will beat it to market. Might that mean it will end up on Sony's next-gen platform instead? A few cagey responses from Sony Worldwide Studios head Shuhei Yoshida certainly seems suspicious.

Because the game did not have a specific release date, GameStop made the decision to remove the game from our system. Ueda Discusses Last Guardian and Debuts New Trailer at TGS, Reveals Holiday 2011 Release

Sony debuted a new trailer for the much-anticipated The Last Guardian at the Tokyo Game Show. Afterwards, the game's director, Fumito Ueda, gave a brief update on development and answered a few questions. Ueda explained the long lapses in any new information on a change in their development practices. On both Ico and Shadow of the Colossus they worked on R&D and production at the same time.
