Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning coming in February

At the Gamescom 2011 EA press conference today, the company announced a release date for Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. The stage presentation mentioned a European release date of February 10, 2012 -- an EA rep also dropped mention of the North American release date, February 7.

Amalur is an effort from Big Huge Games to craft an actual big, huge game. It's the most ambitious title from the studio, after having been picked up by 38 Studios. We saw a lengthy demo in May, so check out our preview for more details.

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning gets first gameplay trailer

The PAX gameplay demo trailer for Big Huge Games' upcoming third-person hack-and-slash RPG, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, has been released. In case you haven't been following Reckoning, it's being helmed by Oblivion's lead designer, Ken Rolston, and also features the work of Spawn creator Todd McFarlane. An attractive pedigree, if you ask me.

The developer-narrated video shows off a handful of locations and creatures, but primarily focuses on some examples of how swordplay and magic are used in combat. Read more »

Interview: Big Huge Games GM Sean Dunn on Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning

The teams at developer Big Huge Game and parent company 38 Studios are pushing very hard for the upcoming game Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning to make a name for itself in the universe of open-world role-playing games.

Helping the cause for Reckoning is the involvement of an industry heavy-weight like Ken Rolston, lead designer on Oblivion and Morrowind. Also shining a spotlight on the upcoming title are names like best-selling author R.A. Salvatore and comic book legend Todd McFarlane. Based on our recent demo of the game, things to be shaping up nicely for the property. Read more »

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning Preview

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning Preview

When it was first revealed, a lot of hyperbole was thrown at the feet of the Big Huge Games-developed action RPG, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. I carried some of that skepticism with me when I went to see the game during an EA Partners Showcase at GDC 2011 and walked away with fresh ink scrawled in my notebook of "things on my radar." Read more »

EA and 38 Studios Detail Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, Formerly Codenamed 'Project Mercury'

Electronic Arts and 38 Studios have finally revealed details on its upcoming title, an "open-world" single-player RPG in a "mysterious and magical new fantasy world created by New York Times best-selling author R. A. Salvatore." Previously codenamed Project Mercury, the RPG now sports the title Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning and is planned for release on the PC, Xbox 360 and PS3.

Although the title will be developed by Big Huge Games, which was acquired by 38 Studios from THQ last year, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning has some big names attached to its vision.
