March NPD: 3DS launch-o-rama
Market research firm has issued its latest monthly retail-only sales report, covering February 27 through April 2--the first since the Nintendo 3DS handheld launched in March. As ever, console manufacturers have come out of the woodwork to support the report with figures and marketing spin.
Nintendo relays that the 3DS sold "just shy of 400,000 units" in the US within its first seven days of sale after launching on March 27. This falls slightly short of the regular Nintendo DS models, which combined sold 460,000 units. Read more »
Homefront patch fixes Xbox 360 'Profile Freeze'
Yesterday, the recently downsized team at Kaos announced a new title update for the Xbox 360 version of its recently released shooter Homefront was available. The title update specifically addresses "all 'Profile Freeze' issues" gamers have experienced since the game's launch. According to the blog post announcing the update, the developer is "hard at work on further improvements" that players will see down the line. Read more »
What are you playing: Down by the Water
I'm getting ready to pack up and move my life to Los Angeles from Toronto, but before then I need to get some gaming time in. The last two games I've played at home were for review, so it would be nice to actually spend some of my personal time playing for fun.
In the meantime: What are you playing? (Click any editor's name to visit their Twitter page. Follow Shacknews on Twitter for regular updates and giveaways.) Read more »
THQ estimates one million units sold for Homefront
THQ has announced Homefront has sold an estimated one million units since launch across North America, Europe, and Asian regions. The publisher noted it has shipped 2.4 million units of the shooter to retail since launching on March 15.
The number doesn't sound too unbelievable, since it's counting worldwide sales. We previously saw THQ estimating 375,000 in North America on the first day, so it's reasonable that the addition of Europe and Asia would push it past the million mark. The game also hit #1 on the UK's Chart Track weekly report. Read more »
Homefront Review
Homefront wants to be thought of as the Red Dawn game. Seventeen years later and without Patrick Swayze, Jennifer Gray, and, yes, Charlie Sheen, I'm not 100 percent convinced that "from the writer of Red Dawn" works as strongly as its promoters hope. That might be to Homefront's advantage, though, because the game barely manages a hollow caricature of the movie.
Homefront follows in Red Dawn's footsteps as if they led the way to freedom. A unified Korea replaces the Cuban/Russian coalition of the movie, but other than the change in uniforms, the divide-America invasion strategy looks the same. And like the movie, the story picks up with a band of rebels in a small Colorado town. We do get to be adults this time, with the player taking the role of a pilot who the resistance breaks out of captivity for a special mission. Read more »
THQ claims 375K day-one Homefront sales
Despite an embattled launch, THQ is claiming fairly impressive day-one sales for Homefront. The company announced that in North America, the game sold approximately 375,000 copies. CEO Brian Farrell said the company is "delighted with first day sales" and is already working on re-orders from retailers. Read more »
Homefront losing the battle at launch
It's been a tough release day for Homefront, the near-future shooter in which players take up arms as American freedom fighters fending off occupation of the heartland by a unified Korea. After a massive marketing campaign, the early reviews indicate the game may struggle living up to the hype. Metacritic currently shows it with a 72 "Metascore" (for Xbox 360) based on 31 review ranging from a high of 93 to a low of 50. This puts it in the "mixed or average" category on the site--a score range almost certainly below publisher THQ's expectations.
Investors wasted no time showing their displeasure with the results. Reuters reports that shares of THQ (THQI) fell more than 20 percent during trading today on the Nasdaq. Volume also spiked to several times its daily average during the steep decline. Read more »
The video game release list of 3/14-3/20
Next week will voyage into the near future with Kaos Studios' shooter Homefront, and probe the distant past with The Creative Assembly's strategy game Total War: Shogun 2, while Yakuza 4 will ground us in the present day. In the worlds of wild fantasy, we'll be getting Okamiden, DS sequel to the much-loved Okami, and wacky racing on Wii with Trackmania: Build to Race.
Homefront Preview: The First Three Chapters
Warning: This preview contains spoilers for the first three chapters of Homefront.
Watching the lifeless bodies of American civilians being unceremoniously pushed into ditches that serve as makeshift graves it hits me: Homefront's developers want to make me mad.
The first time I saw Homefront's single-player mode, I was told that the developers involved wanted players to feel like using a weapon as soon as they got their hands on one. Morbid as that might sound, I presume they mean that they want to give players a reason to fight rather than an order or expectation to do so. It didn't click for me the first time I played the game. Now, having played further into the game, I get it. Read more »
Homefront 'Resistance' Trailer Talks of a New American Revolution
In a new trailer for the upcoming shooter Homefront, images of an invaded United States flicker as a disembodied voice details the forthcoming revolution to liberate the nation. The plan for liberation is fairly simple: destroy everything that isn't "Made in America." The reward for enlisting--or pre-ordering--into the Homefront battle on PC? A free copy of the fantastic, "not so Made in America" shooter Metro 2033 on Steam or Direct2Drive.
