An Xbox Live Arcade release of the splendid Torchlight and the opportunity to hold eerie chat shows with your friends Live Avatars via Kinect are amongst the goodies revealed yesterday by Microsoft at the ongoing 2011 International Consumer Electronics Show.
Torchlight will arrive as part of Microsoft's 'House Party' event on Xbox Live Arcade, which will see five big releases over five weeks. The others will be Ubisoft's revamped Beyond Good & Evil HD, Contra prequel Hard Corps: Uprising, Microsoft's Full House Poker and PopCap's Bejeweled Blitz Live. [Update: 11:05am] Shack user acare84 reminds us you can activate your Torchlight serial code via Steam, which should give you access to both the PC and Mac version of Torchlight via SteamPlay.Shacknews tested this method with an older serial code received by purchasing the game on Runic's website, on a new Steam account. It did work for us; however, some users report issues with this method and that serial codes are appearing to be invalid. Read more »

Runic Games is hoping to bring its isometric dungeon crawler Torchlight to the PS3 and Xbox 360 through PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade respectively. In an interview with Joystiq, Runic CEO Max Schaefer said "We're trying, we're talking [to Sony and Microsoft] and we hope to get that done quickly."

Torchlight 2 is already sounding like a much larger game than the original. "People felt a little claustrophobic with the structure - Torchlight is just one town and a series of dungeons underneath. So the obvious remedy for that is to make big overworlds and different cities, so we're doing that," explains Max Schaefer, CEO of developer Runic Games in an interview with Gamasutra.

Runic Games' indie action RPG Torchlight has sold 500,000 copies at retail and digitally on the PC. It was also recently released for the Mac along with the release of the Mac version of Steam.
Additionally, China-based MMO publisher and developer Perfect World has just announced (via Joystiq) that it has acquired a majority stake in Runic Games for around $8.4 million. Runic is currently working on an MMORPG version of Torchlight, which is slated to be a free-to-play game likely supported by micro-transactions. This is a popular business model in China and should be a successful partnership for both parties. Read more »

With Valve's digital distribution platform Steam slated to launch on the Mac platform tomorrow--Wednesday, May 12--the company today issued a few more details.
New "collections of Mac titles" will be available on Wednesdays, Valve explained today, with "each designed to highlight specific functionalitites of Steam on the Mac."
