Microsoft's first foray into free-to-play on Xbox Live has become something of a success. Today, the developer has revealed that Happy Wars has reached over 1.2 million players worldwide. Given the price of entry is simply an Xbox Live Gold account, it's unsurprising that players would give it a try.
"We put a lot of effort into making a game that would appeal to every type of player, but it is still incredible to see so many join the battle so quickly," game director Yoichi Take said in a press release.

Microsoft is finally dipping a tentative toe in the free-to-play market with the release of Happy Wars next week. The multiplayer action game will be available next Friday, October 12, for free if you're an Xbox Live Gold member.

Xbox 360 is finally jumping into the world of free-to-play. The "large-scale multiplayer" action game, Happy Wars, will be launching as a free download to all Xbox Live Gold members, Microsoft has announced.
Of course, being a free-to-play game, there will be tons of microtransactions available within the game. In fact, thousands of "lavish" items will be made available in the Item Shop "to flaunt your originality." In addition, the game promises to be updated regularly with more items and character customization parts.
