The Guitar Hero franchise fell "because it didn't have any nourishment and care," Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick admitted to Forbes in an interview about the monolithic publisher's approach to innovating. Kotick also said that the DJ Hero series, also currently on hiatus, flopped because there simply wasn't an audience to support it.

The Guitar Hero series has already lived a bit past its expiration date, but the downloadable content train has finally come to an official end now that the April track pack is out. Activision community manager Dan Amrich noted on the PlayStation Blog, "With the release of April’s downloadable Track Packs, Guitar Hero as a franchise goes on vacation until further notice." Amrich is also giving away a Guitar Hero time capsule with goodies from the series.
In the comments, Amrich notes to one user that the packs will still be available for download anytime, so fans who are extremely late to the party can still dive in and choose from all the assorted pieces of DLC thus far. We just won't see any new track packs hitting in the coming months. Read more »

In February, monolithic publisher Activision announced that it was closing its music games division and cancelling True Crime: Hong Kong. While the former was not entirely unexpected due to the crowded rhythm game market, the latter was a little surprising. Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz recently, Activision's VP of developer relations and acquisitions Dan Winters explained a little more.

Activision has announced a sizable new track pack for Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock. The "Modern Rock Mega Pack" includes nine new tracks, ranging from Jet to Queens of the Stone Age. The pack is available for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii starting today, and costs $16.49 (1320 MS Points, 1650 Wii Points). Each song is also available individually for $1.99 (160 MS Points, 200 Wii Points). Read more »

Following the recent Activision decision to scale back music-based releases, a message on the official DJ Hero 2 site announced that--following the release of previously announced content--no future DLC would be made available for the DJ Hero franchise or its sister series, Guitar Hero. Soon after Activision Blizzard announced it would scale back its entire music-based video game business due to declining profits, Shacknews contacted the publisher to find out whether its current crop of music titles would continue to see DLC support. A trio of tracks from veteran sulkers Nine Inch Nails are coming to Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock today as part of a ten-pack mega-pack of downloadable content, including that song with the rude bit. You know the one. Trent and the gang are joined by A Day to Remember, The Damned Things, Hawthorne Heights, HIM and The Used.
Tracks will cost $2 (160 Microsoft Points; 200 Wii Points) a pop but if your tastes are a little eclectic, you can buy the whole lot for $18 (1440 MS Points; 1800 Wii Points). Read more »

The latest Guitar Hero has dropped to $49.99 (down $10) for the standard disc edition, to $79.99 (down $20) for the game and a single toy axe, and to $159.99 (down $20) for the entire plastic "super" bundle. Read more »

A new round of downloadable content for Activision's rhythm games Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock and DJ Hero 2 is out today on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii.
The mix 'em up scores three remixes of tunes from Linkin Park, while the strum 'em up gets three tunes from grizzled shock-rockers KISS--including what is boldly described as "possibly one of the greatest rock songs of all time," 'Rock And Roll All Nite.' Read more »

Free downloadable content packs for music 'em ups DJ Hero 2 and Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock are now briefly up for grabs, courtesy of a sponsorship deal with Coca-Cola, though act fast because next week you'll need to pay for them.
The DJ Hero 2 pack of three new DJ Tiesto Mixes can be had for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii simply by signing up for the beverage company's 'MyCoke Rewards' program, no purchase necessary. The Warriors of Rock pack of four My Chemical Romance tunes, meanwhile, is similarly free--sharing the same login--but is only available for Xbox 360 through this offer. Read more »

Activision and Linkin Park want to brighten your day, the way only "Rap-Rock" can. The publisher revealed it is releasing a six-pack of songs from Linkin Park's latest album, "A Thousand Suns." The tracks will be available on October 19 as Guitar Hero DLC in a bundle for $11.99 (960MS Points, 1200 Wii Points) or individually for $1.99 each (160MS Points, 200 Wii Points.)
The DLC also includes the track, "The Catalyst," featured in promotional material for EA's Medal of Honor, proving that Linkin Park doesn't take sides in the war between video game publishers. The complete track list can be found after the break. Read more »

It appears that "some consumers" are getting disc read errors with Activision's Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock, spurring the publisher to "immediate action," reports Joystiq.
If your disc is having read errors, you can place a telephone call to Activision's customer service line at 1-800-225-6588. Support should "offer existing customers free replacement discs in exchange for any purchased defective disc." Read more »
