Strong sales of Vicarious Vision's DS Guitar Hero entry, a game the studio freely admits was never planned or requested, have set new sales records for publisher Activision.
In the week following its June 22 release, Guitar Hero: On Tour sold over 300,000 units in North America. That feat, Activision claims, makes it the company's largest Nintendo DS software launch in North America "by more than a factor of eight." Read more »

A hardware bundle containing a Nintendo DS and Guitar Hero: On Tour will be available at North American retailers when the game debuts on June 22, Nintendo has revealed.
At present, the bundle marks the only offering of the silver-black DS Lite in North America. No price was given, though the DS hardware is regularly priced at $129.99, with the Activision-published, Vicarious Visions-produced game selling at $49.99. Read more »

No one asked Vicarious Visions to make Guitar Hero for the Nintendo DS. No one at studio owner Activision, fellow Activision subsidiary RedOctane, or Nintendo believed it was even possible.
"People thought it was ludicrous," Vicarious CEO Karthik Bala told me at a Guitar Hero event earlier this week. "It was never in the plan to do that."
As Bala puts it, the whole thing came out of the Vicarious staff playing around to "see if it was even possible to do a really good music rhythm game on a handheld." Twenty-three prototypes and a few cardboard guitars later, a breakthrough came in the form of a "crazy Frankenstein GBA cartridge" wired with fret buttons. Read more »

Activision has revealed the long-rumored DS rendition of its Guitar Hero franchise and its accompanying peripheral, IGN reports.
Entitled Guitar Hero: On Tour, the game utilizes a peripheral called the Guitar Grip to recreate the Guitar Hero experience. The peripheral plugs into the Nintendo DS's Game Boy Advance slot on the bottom of the system and features four buttons versus the traditional guitar controller's five. Read more »
