Wii Exclusive: Kirby's Epic Yarn

Kirby's Epic Yarn wove itself into gamers' hearts this year with its syrupy-sweet fabric-based visuals and decidedly unpunishing difficulty. Bead-collection, hidden items, and creative level-design help keep more experienced gamers engaged, but young kids and those who don't usually game will also find themselves hard-pressed not to have tons of fun with the little pink hero. Kirby's shape-shifting abilities keep the action fresh, and optional mini-game-based levels do a lot to extend the experience. Read more »

GoldenEye XBLA in 'No Man's Land,' Says Rare

Despite widespread interest in a downloadable Xbox 360 or Wii version of Rare's Nintendo 64 shooter GoldenEye 007, licensing issues and other concerns have the project "locked in a no-man's land," Rare senior engineer Nick Burton stated.

"The ball's not in anybody at Rare's court really," Burton informed Videogamer. "It's squarely in the license holders' courts. It's a shame. It's kind of locked in this no man's land. There's nothing on [Xbox] Live Arcade, there's nothing on Wii." Read more »

Microsoft Nixes GoldenEye XBLA Rumors

Despite recent buzz over a story in Xbox World 360, Microsoft Game Studios still has no plans to release Rare's Nintendo 64 FPS GoldenEye 007 on Xbox Live Arcade.

"Unfortunately, we were never contacted by the publication to confirm information or participate in the story in any way, as we would have confirmed that we do not have the necessary rights to release GoldenEye on Xbox Live Arcade," said MGS according to Eurogamer. Read more »

Haze Developer Sees Dim Future for UK Gaming Industry

During a David Doak interview conducted by GamesIndustry.biz, the Free Radical Design co-founder (pictured left) issued strong comments regarding the current relationship between the UK government and video game developers. "Here's an industry that 20 years ago we led the world in--through bedroom rock-and-roll development on the early home computers--and now there's a very real chance that what is now a real profession is going to be driven out of the UK because they don't make any concessions to it," Doak said. His independent studio resides in Nottingham, England. Doak--whose past credits include Rare's GoldenEye 007 and Free Radical's TimeSplitters series--was also critical of the UK's focus on video games as a moral issue. "The UK Government needs to do something more useful than just criticizing violent content in video games," he said. Earlier this year, Labour party MP Keith Vaz met with Prime Minister Tony Blair to discuss the issue of violent videogames being made available to children. Following that meeting, Blair had mostly good things to say about the industry, stating, "The talent and creativity that our industry houses and nurtures is what makes the games industry a part of Britain's cultural heritage, and more specifically, an important asset in Britain's creative and cultural future." What Doak would prefer is assistance, rather than talk. He pointed out the UK government's affinity for the film industry, while at the same time bemoaning the general disregard for the many video game developers across the country. "If you look up the best places to live in the world, Nottingham is not British Columbia," he quipped, explaining that personnel are often being pulled away to countries like Canada, where game development is currently thriving due in part to government support. Doak was in Paris for the Ubidays event, there to promote his studio's upcoming first-person shooter Haze. Although the game was originally expected to release on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC, the game's multiplatform status became unclear when publisher Ubisoft began referring to the title only as a PlayStation 3 game. Doak mentioned that, while the game will debut on the PlayStation 3, other versions are in development for "all platforms."

  • GRAW Scores Top Honors at BAFTA

[ps2] [xbox] [xbox360] [gamecube] [ds] [psp] [gba]
The British Academy of Film and Television Arts held its annual video game award ceremony this week, awarding honors to seventeen games in categories such as Innovation, Artistic Achievement, Character, and others, as well as an additional "Gamers' Award" selected by readers of publication The Sun. This year, Ubisoft Paris' Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter (PS2, Xbox, X360, PC) took the highest prize of Best Game, as well as another win for Technical Achievement. It was nominated in a total of eight categories including, somewhat surprisingly, Strategy. Ubisoft celebrated the win with a press release headlined, "Ghost Recon is Officially the Best Game." Sony Computer Entertainment Europe was the strongest publisher represented at the show, picking up a total of five wins from 19 nominations for games such as LocoRoco (PSP), Shadow of the Colossus (PS2), SingStar Rocks! (PS2), and Buzz!: The BIG Quiz (PS2). Notably, SCEI's Shadow of the Colossus won both Artistic Achievement and Action & Adventure. Nintendo grabbed 10 nominations; of those, it scored two awards, Innovation for Dr. Kawashima's Brain Training: How Old is Your Brain? (NDS). Ubisoft was next with eight nomations, every single one for Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter. Electronic Arts tied with eight nods, winning Sports with EA Chicago's Fight Night Round 3 (PS2, Xbox, X360, PSP). Other notable wins included a deserving Screenplay award for Double Fine's Psychonauts (PS2, Xbox, PC) and a perhaps unexpected Gameplay award for Traveller's Tales' LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy (PS2, Xbox, GCN, X360, NDS, PSP, GBA, PC). The full list of nominees and winners is available here.
  • Ubisoft's Detoc: "Our goal is...to beat EA"

[ps2] [ps3] [xbox] [xbox360] [gamecube] [nintendo] [ds] [psp] [gba]
Speaking to Reuters yesterday, Ubisoft's North American head Laurent Detoc expressed his company's desire to climb to the top of the video game publishing heap. "Our goal is not to sell to EA but to beat EA," said Detoc. Electronic Arts is currently the world's most successful video game publisher; Ubisoft holds the #4 slot worldwide and #5 in North America. In 2004, EA purchased a 19.9% stake in Ubisoft, an action Ubisoft considered hostile. Detoc's statement this week is more confident than statements made last year by Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot, who admitted that "it would be difficult to block" a full scale hostile takeover attempt by EA. Part of Detoc's enthusiasm comes from Ubisoft's early investment in Wii development, which is seeing the company release more launch titles for the system than even Nintendo's own first party development, and puts it leagues ahead other third party publishers which have only more recently begun stepping up Wii support. Speaking on the controller, Detoc explained, "You get it right away" when picking it up for the first time. "The Wii is unlikely not to succeed," he continued. "The curiosity factor is going to help [Nintendo] and it's an impulse buy for most people." Detoc hopes that Ubisoft Paris' upcoming launch title Red Steel (Wii) can achieve a similar reception to Rare's bestselling GoldenEye 007 (N64).
  • No PSP Price Cut This Year, In Case You Were Wondering

    [psp]
One of the most common rumors about any video game console is that a price cut is coming any day now, and PSP has been getting its own share of such rumors recently. However, according to a Reuters report sourced from Sony representatives, Sony's portable system won't be getting one this year. Sony is currently selling the machine in its standard $250 package, as well as at a $200 price point which does not include pack-in items. Sony is banking on the system's library of games, which will have grown to about 230 by year end, to move units.
  • Groove Games Causes Bedlam

    [ps3] [xbox360] [nintendo]
Publisher Groove Games, which has released titles such as Digital Extremes' Pariah (PS2, Xbox, PC) and Cyberlore's Playboy: The Mansion (PS2, Xbox, PC), has announced the formation of its new fully-owned flagship development studio. Bedlam, based out of Toronto, will develop games for next-generation consoles that are based on original intellectual property. Bedlam's in-house talent hails from studios such as EA Canada, Ubisoft, and Rockstar, with credits on games such as Silent Hill, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Manhunt, The Warriors, and others. "At Bedlam, we promote creativity and empower our employees to take daring new strides when designing games," said director of game development Zandro Chan. "The growing team brings triple-A development experience to the table, and we look forward to releasing details about our first project shortly." No information regarding any of the team's projects has yet been announced.

Late Night Consoling

It wasn't until I looked at the list of Nintendo's published titles that I realized what a brilliant maneuver this is by the Big N. We all know Nintendo is responsible for a boatload of classics, but until you see them all side-by-side, it's hard to imagine how many they have. Kid Icarus, Punch-Out, Earthbound, F-Zero, Super Mario RPG, Yoshi's Island, 1080 Snowboarding, GoldenEye 007, Killer Instinct, all of the console Marios and Zeldas and so many more. All of those games, at your fingertips, and Nintendo is even thinking about making them free to download. I'm sure there some out there saying, "Who cares if they release any new games if I can get access to all those!"

  • The List: Nintendo's Downloadable Games for Revolution

    [nintendo]
Speaking to Famitsu, Nintendo confirmed that all of their published NES, SNES, and N64 games will be available for download. While the magazine didn't offer a complete list of the games, some gamers have compiled lists of their own. The number of released titles appears to be ranging between 214 and 221, but in any case, here's the one IGN has up. They're quick to point out that in the end, some titles won't make it such as Banjo Kazooie as Rare holds the license on that.
  • Studios Bidding on Halo Movie Script

    [xbox]
Most of the major picture studios received the Halo script today and they are currently engaging in a bidding war for the rights to make the movie. Microsoft tapped 28 Days Later writer Alex Garland to pen the movie adaptation and had messengers dressed as the Master Chief to hit up each studio with the script. The studios were to read it over lunch and place bids in the afternoon. According to Defamer.com, those privy to info on the script say it's a dud. Hmm, a Hollywood insider saying a game adaptation script is a "horrible?" Considering they're the peeps responsible for Alone in the Dark and House of the Dead, maybe that's a good thing!
  • Ninja Gaiden Black to Sell at $29.99

    [xbox]
Tecmo confirmed today that Ninja Gaiden Black for the Xbox will retail at $29.99. A Tecmo rep told GameSpot to not be fooled by its value price. "I don't want you to think that NGB is going to be a cheap re-make of NG because Team Ninja has been working their butts off to completely revamp the game from the ground up and adding loads of new stuff," the rep said.
  • New Donkey Kong for Revolution

    [nintendo]
Not necessarily surprising news, but it's the first we've heard of it. Nintendo confirmed to Famitsu that a Donkey Kong title is being developed for the Revolution. Absolutely no specifics were given, so it's up in the air if its a platformer, another Donkey Konga, or something completely different.
  • A New Wreckless Game in the Works?

    [xbox]
Just yesterday I was thinking, "Hmm, how come they didn't make a sequel to Wreckless?" It was one of the Xbox's first big titles but never was any mention of a sequel muttered.. until now. IGN discovered on a Japanese retail site a listing for Double S.T.E.A.L. The Second Crush. Well, it so happens to be that Wreckless was called Double S.T.E.A.L. in Japan. However, it has an August 4 release date and a reduced price tag. Maybe it's not a sequel and just a re-release?
  • Capcom Ports Two Oldies to PSP

    [psp]
Capcom announced its plan to port both Mega Man Legends and Breath of Fire 3 to the PSP. Both were previously released on the PlayStation and Nintendo 64. The version of Mega Man Legends is actually a reworked version of the N64 title released here in the states. This was Mega Man's first foray into 3D. Both are set to ship sometime in August.
