PS3 Exclusive: God of War 3
We've followed Kratos from lowly soldier to the god of war. From the highest peaks of Mount Olympus to the shallow depths of Hades. We've followed him everywhere and it's been a prime example of supreme badassery from start to finish.God of War 3 throws Kratos into a world of ultimate action, featuring huge and beautiful environments and combat that can be as senseless or precise as you prefer. It's a story about the an intense warrior who cannot let go of his past and, because of the mostly self-inflicted evils that haunt him, is willing to risk his future. It's the definition of a blockbuster action game, making it easy to name God of War 3 the best PS3 game of 2010. Action: God of War III
Over the past several years, Kratos has cemented himself as one of videogaming's most disgruntled badasses. We all suspected that the final chapter in the furious Spartan's quest for revenge (and Kratos' first original adventure on PS3) would live up to the high expectations set by the first two games. What we didn't expect is how masterfully God of War III would top the size, scope, and beautiful bloodiness of the high-octane combat and fantasy that made the series a favorite in the first place. Audio-visual Experience: Red Dead Redemption
Among the truly respectable number of great-looking and sounding games this year were a handful titles that used their presentational chutzpah to engage players in truly exceptional ways. Red Dead Redemption's open-world take on the industrialization of the American West was enhanced greatly by beautiful postcard-worthy vistas ranging from scorching deserts to snow-capped mountains. SCE Santa Monica's brutal PlayStation 3-exclusive sequel God of War III took top honors as the best-selling console game in the United States during March 2010, research firm NPD Group revealed today in its monthly update on hardware and software sales.
"For the first time since its launch in the US, the PS3 has four titles in the Top 10, and was also the leader in console software sales," noted NPD's Anita Frazier. Meanwhile, only two Xbox 360 titles--Final Fantasy XIII, Battlefield: Bad Company 2--made the chart: Read more »

God of War 3 might have come out in North America yesterday but Australians will not be ripping gods' heads off until Thursday and Europeans must wait until Friday, sadly meaning all that can give us the mythological violence we crave is this launch trailer.
God of War 3, then--a PlayStation game of epic yelling, legendary posing and fine ultra-violence. Our Garnett certainly was impressed in our review. More challenge rooms might be coming as downloadable content, game director Stig Asmussen has hinted. Read more »

A lot of extreme words get thrown around when discussing God of War 3. Tapping Greek mythology, it fashions a classic heroic tragedy following Kratos, the Spartan warrior and bastard son of Zeus, on his quest of vengeance to kill his father for the Gods' meddling in his life. The prior two installments of the series on PlayStation 2 lived up to the grandeur of this setting with action that set a standard for both their beauty and brutality. Accordingly, expectations have soared to monumental proportions and God of War 3 has come to be looked to as a defining game for the power of the PlayStation 3 hardware and the quality of game that it can be used to create.

What's that, Kratos? You think you're big stuff, just because you've slayed some mythological deities? Why, I think it's time that you were offered some perspective.
How ever will Kratos fight his way out of this predicament? You'll have to wait until God of War III hits North America on March 16--that's next Tuesday--to find out. Should you want to try the PlayStation 3 exclusive on for size before then, a demo showcasing its extreme brutality is currently available for download from the online PlayStation Store.

Hot on the heels of announcing the game was done and off to be manufactured, Sony turned me loose to play the first level in God of War 3. A fairly brief cutscene set the stage: Zeus high atop Mt. Olympus, marshalling the Gods in defense against the enormous Titans scaling the mountainside. The camera moved in on the forested Titan lumbering her way upward; Kratos screamed his vow to destroy Zeus; and I took control of our anguished anti-hero as the first waves of Olympian warriors set upon Gaia.
