Impressions: Final Fantasy X/X-2 Remaster restores a Square Enix classic

Editor's note: Given its similarities to the original PlayStation 2 release, we decided against a formal review of the PS3/Vita HD remaster. In this piece, Steve Watts focuses on how the game has stood against the test of time and how the HD release improves upon the original.

The voice acting is, on the whole, pretty good for its era--I even enjoyed Wakka's faux-Pacific-Islander. The linearity didn't bother me this time around, since the settings were unique and it supported the idea of a pilgrimage.

Final Fantasy X-2 HD to have International release content

HD re-releases sometimes have the opportunity to fill in gaps for western gamers, and include features or content that never saw the light of day here. Just like Kingdom Hearts 1.5 HD Remix included some content that hadn't made it to our shores, Square will be filling in the North American gaps with the Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster.

A first look at Final Fantasy X-2 HD

A first look at Final Fantasy X-2 HD

Final Fantasy X-2 was quite the odd release. Lampooned for its odd title, the game now seems sensible after recent releases from the JRPG publisher. Time makes the heart grow fond, and it appears many fans are now eagerly awaiting the HD re-release of both X and X-2.

It appears the upcoming HD bundle is no quick cash-in, either. Square Enix released the first screenshots from the X-2 remaster, and they look impressive. According to the publisher, not only have the character models been redone, but "the textures of the surrounding environment and backgrounds were also carefully redrawn."
