With today's PlayStation Store update, you'll be able to get a number of legacy titles from Japanese publishing giants Square Enix and Namco Bandai. Select Final Fantasy games will be half-off, including Dissidia, Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions, and Final Fantasy 4: Complete, along with the PSOne Classics versions of the original Final Fantasy, FF2, FF5, FF6, FF7, FF8, and FF9.

Final Fantasy fans got a short-lived surprise over the weekend, as Final Fantasy VII was briefly released on the Square Enix Web site. However, the downloaded copies wouldn't work, so even those who grabbed it early are in the same boat with other players who are still waiting.

Square Enix recently commented that it wouldn't dare remake Final Fantasy VII until it had surpassed it with a new FF. If you, like me, are a PC gamer with no real connection to the series and have no idea why it's so beloved, you'll seen get to see for yourself, as Squeenix today confirmed the leak that the JRPG's been revamped for a PC re-release.

Is there any Final Fantasy game more beloved than VII? While fans can spend days arguing over which game is the best, it's undeniable that the adventures of Cloud and company are the most iconic. No wonder fans have been long-clamoring for a remake of the game.
Square Enix CEO Yoichi Wada says that the company would be "happy" to make a full-fledged remake of Final Fantasy VII. However, before it can do so, he believes the company must make a game that "exceeds the quality" of the PSone classic.

Outside of the two online Final Fantasy games, only two main entries of the Final Fantasy franchise ever found release on the PC. Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy VIII were originally released in 1998 and 2000, ported by now-Square Enix subsidary Eidos. While they were technically flawed, the ports helped introduced the franchise to a whole new audience.
It appears that Square Enix attempted to revive those ports for re-release on Steam. A report by RPG Site shows that Steam's "Content Description Record" (accessible via the "Steam Registry Toolkit") holds entries for both releases. It's clear that Square Enix had the intent to distribute the games on Valve's digital distribution service, as modifications to the game code were apparently discovered. According to the report, game files were edited, likely in an attempt to make the games "run better on newer operating systems." Read more »

A downloadable re-release of Square's PSone classic Final Fantasy VII will be released in the online PlayStation Store today, enabling PlayStation 3 and PSP owners to purchase and play through the beloved role-playing classic.
Sony CEO Jack Tretton made the announcement at Sony's E3 press conference today, noting that close to 50 PSone titles are coming soon to the online marketplace.
Update: The PlayStation Store digital download of FFVII runs $9.99.

Square's (now Square Enix) beloved PlayStation RPG Final Fantasy VII International is out on the Japanese PlayStation Network for PlayStation 3 and PSP, Kotaku spotted.
Costing 1,500 Yen ($15), FF7 International is the Japanese localisation of the American version, which improved the original release with new cutscenes, additional graphics in some areas, a better spell management system, and polished and new battles. Read more »
