As someone who largely skipped consoles growing up, the countless modern indie platformers inspired by the likes of Super Mario Bros. and Metroid hold no nostalgic draw for me. But hearing Dustforce developer Team Hitbox cite Quake 3's dizzying potential for "majestic moves" as an influence upon its new platformer Spire, now that makes my nostalgia gland fizz all right.

There have been some difficult platformers released in the last couple of years. That Dustforce stands out as one of the toughest says a lot about the game. It's sure to appeal to platforming perfectionists. That’s not something I would have have imagined myself ever saying about a game centered on broom-wielding janitors.

The finalists for the 14th annual Independent Games Festival's Main Competition have been announced, highlighting some of the greatest indie games to come out in the past year. Indie game fans might notice a couple of familiar titles like the oft-nominated platforming adventure Fez (by Polytron) and Alexander Bruce's mind-melting first person puzzler, Antichamber. That said, the IGF juries have selected a number of less-exposed titles that are well-deserving of some recognition.

Delightful dirt-destroying "acrobatic puzzle platformer" Dustforce has reappeared on the radar after an extended silence. Having released a fine prototype back in 2010, developer Hitbox Team today sent word that the full game will be released via Steam on PC and Mac in "late 2011."
