Dust 514 beta impressions

Dust 514 beta impressions

Dust 514 is a strange beast for the PlayStation 3. A free-to-play first-person shooter tying in with a PC-based massively multiplayer online role-playing game presents numerous hurdles for both the player and the game's developer to overcome. Free-to-play is on the rise in the PC realm, but on consoles, it is uncharted territory.

For the player, a lot of the challenges come down to dealing with an in-game economy that isn't set in stone. Once the full game goes live and ties in with the EVE Online servers, how much ISK -- free currency earned from completing matches -- an assault rifle costs could change from day to day. An event like last winter's raid on the Jita trading hub might happen again and could royally screw everyone.

Dust 514 Neocom app for Vita features detailed

Cross-platform synergy! That's what CCP's Dust 514 is all about, so it's no surprise that the PS Vita is joining the EVE Online action. The "Neocom" is a free companion app for the Vita that lets you interact with various aspects of the Dust 514 world.

"There's no direct gameplay," CCP's Cameron Payne explained. But "it brings all the customization, community, and commerce features onto the Vita... You can interact with battles, purchase items on the market, play around with your dropsuit or vehicle and then save it so you can use it on PS3."

High-end Dust 514 load-out to cost about 24 cents, but don't die

High-end Dust 514 load-out to cost about 24 cents, but don't die

As with most free-to-play games, CCP's upcoming PS3-exclusive shooter, Dust 514, will end up costing something for dedicated players. For example, fully outfitting a character with high-end gear will cost pennies.

"If you assume that somebody came in and had to buy, with real-world money, the best gear for a serious throw down--it was like a 24-cent thing," CCP's Morgan Godat said.

DUST 514 preview

DUST 514 preview

With its deep ties to EVE Online, DUST 514 is drawing from a "massive, persistent" online world containing "hundreds of thousands" of players, spanning "thousands of solar systems and individual planets. But does any of that matter? Can this intricate and dense world be relevant to PS3 gamers? Turns out, DUST is more than okay for non-EVE players. It doesn't require any knowledge of the EVE universe and is "designed to provide great moment-to-moment shooter gameplay."

Dust 514 dev considers Vita controls

Dust 514 has interesting plans for tying the PlayStation 3 shooter with the PC MMO EVE Online. But the cross-platform pitch may be getting even more ambitious, with recent hints that the game could use the PS Vita as a controller.

"Once you get your hands on the Vita, you can imagine it as a controller for your Dust experience," he said. "Suddenly you can think about all the things you can do with that screen."

Dust 514 supports mouse and keyboard

Dust 514 will have an option for keyboard and mouse control on the PlayStation 3, making it one of the few games to take advantage of that option on PS3. (Unreal Tournament 3 allows for KB&M play.) Given the game takes place in the same persistent world as EVE Online, the control option should come as a nice concession for those crossing over from the PC.
