After a record-breaking development cycle, this was the year Duke Nukem lived again. It started when Gearbox Software surprised attendees of PAX 2010 with the announcement that it was taking over publishing duties of the beleaguered Duke Nukem Forever. Studio head Randy Pitchford appeared in teaser videos with breathless excitement, and for a brief moment we believed that the game might be worthwhile.

Gearbox has revealed new downloadable content for Duke Nukem Forever, adding a new single-player campaign to the game along with a handful of multiplayer maps. The content is set to launch on December 13 on all platforms.
'The Doctor Who Cloned Me' will bring Duke "deep in the heart of Area-51" where Dr. Proton has been hatching a new, evil plan. Duke will have to contend with "evil clones, aliens queens and anything else that comes his way" in order to save the world. The announcement promises new achievements, weapons, enemies, and bosses.

How much would you be willing pay for Duke Nukem Forever? Critics may have largely rejected it, but video gaming's favourite running joke certainly found a fair few fans, and one has to be curious after all these years of waiting, yes? Publisher 2K dropped the standard PC price to $20 on PC in September, and now it's down to only $10 in a Steam mid-week sale.

Yesterday, Shacknews reported that Duke Nukem Forever would soon be updated to increase Duke's weapon inventory slots from two to four in the single-player portion of the game; however, only the PC version of the game was named as a recipient of the increase.
Today, Gearbox Community Manager Chris Faylor pointed Shacknews to a new thread that outlines the possibility of the console versions of the game getting a similar update. Sorry console Duke fans, but it seems that a change to Duke's weapon slots is "unlikely."

Duke Nukem Forever may not be the sales success that publisher 2K Games and parent company Take-Two Interactive had expected. While its eventual release drew a lot of attention, it appears the fanfare hasn't translated into the numbers originally expected. According to Gamasutra, analyst firm Wedbush Morgan lowered its fiscal Q1 estimates for the company thanks to drastically lower sales than originally predicted. Initial estimates predicted sales of 3 million; the company now expects half that.
Offsetting the disappointing sales of Duke Nukem Forever is LA Noire, which is now expected to sell between 3.5 and 4 million copies. Ironically, in spite of Duke's less-than-warm reception, it's more likely to receive a sequel than Team Bondi's troubled crime thriller. Read more »
