Doom returns to XBLA today

Over a year after Doom was pulled from Xbox Live Arcade due to publisher Activision's rights expiring, the console port of id Software's seminal shooter is returning. If, for some reason, you want to play Doom on Xbox 360 rather than PC--split-screen multiplayer being the only real acceptable answer--you may buy it again from today.

Doom iPhone Details and Screenshots Arrive as id's Carmack Muses Future Plans

With id's first-person shooter classic Wolfenstein 3D having already arrived in iPhone form, the studio today issued details on the forthcoming iPhone adaptation of Doom.

Realtime Worlds Still In Talks With Microsoft About Crackdown Sequel

Though currently at work on the MMO APB, Realtime Worlds is still engaged in talks with Microsoft about a possible Crackdown sequel, according to videogaming247.

It was reported last week that Ruffian Games, a new studio founded by several former Realtime Worlds employees, might get the opportunity to develop Crackdown 2. Though the original was developed by Realtime Worlds, the property is owned by Microsoft. Read more »

Crackdown Vets Form New Studio, Sequel Possible

A new studio titled Ruffian Games has been formed by ex-Crackdown developers, and their first project may be a sequel to the open-world shooter, according to Gamasutra.

Crackdown lead designer Billy Thomson and other key members have set up shop in Dundee, Scotland, and rumors indicate a Crackdown sequel might be their first project. Read more »

Capcom Delivers New Lost Planet Colonies Screens

Publisher Capcom has released several new screenshots of Lost Planet: Extreme Condition Colonies Edition (PC, X360), a repackaging of the 2007 shooter with a number of additions to the game's multiplayer component, including new weapons, maps and modes.

Colonies includes three new single-player modes as well—score attack, boss rush, and off-limit—with off-limit featuring increased movement speed, more powerful weapons, and unlimited ammo. Read more »

Crackdown, APB Developer Raises $50 Million

Independent and Scotland-based developer Realtime Worlds today confirmed that it has raised $50 million in funding for its current and future projects, a feat that required the company to sell off a minority of itself.

Founded by Grand Theft Auto creator David Jones, Realtime Worlds was responsible for the super-powered open world title Crackdown (X360). The company is currently working on All Points Bulletin (PC, X360). Read more »

XBLA Hits Expand with Doom, Assault Heroes; Upcoming Xbox Live Arcade Titles Listed, Pictured

Microsoft has announced that the already-released downloadable Xbox 360 editions of Doom and Assault Heroes will join the Xbox Live Arcade Hits program this Wednesday. At that time, the price of both titles will be permanently reduced from 800 Microsoft Points ($10) to 400 Microsoft Points ($5).

Capcom today officially announced the North American release details for Lost Planet: Extreme Conditions Colonies Edition, an expanded version of the original Lost Planet.

The revamped third person shooter arrives on Xbox 360 and PC on May 27, priced at $29.99. The Xbox 360 edition of the game will be packaged as the Platinum Hits version of Lost Planet: Extreme Conditions.

Colonies features a number of additions to the game's multiplayer component, including new weapons, five new characters, new camera views, new maps and modes. It also packs three new single-player modes-- score attack, boss rush, and off-limit--with off-limit featuring increased movement speed, more powerful weapons, and unlimited ammo. Read more »

Lost Planet: Colonies Unveiled

The first details on Capcom's long-rumored Lost Planet: Colonies have appeared, revealing the title to be a beefed-up version of the original Lost Planet: Extreme Condition, which debuted on PC and Xbox 360 last year.

According to the latest issue of Japanese publication Famitsu, the revamped third person shooter will arrive on Xbox 360 and PC, packing new weapons, a new character, new monsters, and new multiplayer maps and modes. China Details Internet and Online Gaming Crackdown

The Chinese government has announced details of its plan to target internet cafes, illegal computer markets and specific online games to reduce juvenile crime, the Associated Press reports.

The plan, dubbed "Operation For Tomorrow", is aimed at restricting access to online games that the Chinese government considers violent or undesirable for young people. The announcement clarifies a statement released in January in which officials condemned online gaming as a "spiritual opium." Read more »

Microsoft Considering Crackdown Sequel

Microsoft Game Studios corporate VP Shane Kim said that a sequel to its 2006 sandbox superhero game Crackdown (X360) is still a possibility, despite developer Realtime Worlds' movement towards other projects.

Kim explained that while Realtime Worlds has moved in a different direction, Microsoft's ownership of the Crackdown franchise leaves open the option of developing a sequel with a different studio. "We have a great partnership with Realtime Worlds, and they're pursuing a different path from a company perspective," Kim told Game|Life. ESRB Rating Hints at New Lost Planet Title
