In a departure from the usual "when it's done" comments until the gold announcement, id Software today confirmed that DOOM 3: Resurrection of Evil will ship in the week of April 4. DOOM 3 for the Xbox will ship the same week.

Resurrection of Evil picks up two years following the events of the original in a once forgotten and remote UAC research facility on Mars. DOOM 3 Expansion Preview

Related Topics – DOOM 3, id software

GameSpy has the first online preview of Resurrection of Evil, the Nerve Software developed expansion pack for DOOM 3. The article offers an overview of new features and content, quotes from id Software designer Matt Hooper and two screenshots. Here's a bit on the artifact that starts the story for the expansion.

While DOOM 3's Soul Cube was the ancient civilization's ultimate weapon against the forces of Hell, this artifact was Hell's counterpart... and they want it back. Bad. "It's Hell's ultimate weapon," Hooper explains, "and you have to get it to the surface." This artifact and the three demons -- called "Hunters" -- represent a central component of Resurrection. Each of the Hunters has its own special ability, and the artifact is able to "steal" these abilities once each Hunter is defeated, so you can add it to your own arsenal. The first Hunter has an ability called "Hell Time," where everything in the world but you slows down. There's an obvious parallel to "bullet-time" from the Matrix movies and the Max Payne games, although Hooper points out that it's not quite the same [...]
Update: IGN now has their own article about the expansion.

John Carmack Blog

Related Topics – DOOM 3, id software, John Carmack

The Armadillo Aerospace Website is now host of new John Carmack .plan file / blog updates. The id Software programmer hadn't posted a new .plan since early 2003, but he plans on resuming them in the form of a blog while talking about various topics - "some general interest stuff, but a bunch of things will only be of interest to hardcore graphics geeks". In this first new update he mentions he had planned to release the Quake 3 source code late 2004, something which obviously didn't happen.

I intended to release the Q3 source under the GPL by the end of 2004, but we had another large technology licensing deal go through, and it would be poor form to make the source public a few months after a company paid hundreds of thousands of dollars for full rights to it. True, being public under the GPL isn't the same as having a royalty free license without the need to disclose the source, but I'm pretty sure there would be some hard feelings. Previous source code releases were held up until the last commercial license of the technology shipped, but with the evolving nature of game engines today, it is a lot less clear. There are still bits of early Quake code in Half Life 2, and the remaining licensees of Q3 technology intend to continue their internal developments along similar lines, so there probably won't be nearly as sharp a cutoff as before. I am still committed to making as much source public as I can, and I won't wait until the titles from the latest deal have actually shipped, but it is still going to be a little while before I feel comfortable doing the release.

Doom Movie Scriptwriter Addresses Fans

Related Topics – DOOM 3

Dave Callaham, the scripwriter for the upcoming Doom movie, has written a personal letter to the Doom community to address the massive backlash the film has received from some leaked details of the plot. He gave the letter to HomeLAN Fed, who has it hosted on their site. Here's a snippit:

I've found it frustrating that I somehow became the goat for the perceived shortcomings of the film, because (and I say this with no humility whatsoever, because I'm not a humble person), that I am, without a doubt, the greatest ally the Doom fan has had during the entire process of the film being made. I am the only person involved creatively who has ever made any attempt to open discourse with the game's internet fanbase, and I am the only person involved who has continually kept the ideals of the game first and foremost in mind. I very truthfully believe that my unapologetic and hyper-violent script would have been a Doom fan's movie dream come true. However, since my involvement, the film has steadily moved away from the realm of fandom and more toward the realm of traditional Hollywood interests. It's not been ideal, in my opinion, but I did what I could when I could, and I stand by that work.

DOOM Movie Update

Related Topics – DOOM 3

There's a DOOM movie story on Dark Horizons, reporting from the set of the movie in Prague (thanks Blues News). In case you were looking for a movie taking place on Mars, with monsters coming from hell..well, look elsewhere.

The monsters have nothing to do with hell, the plot is not taking place on Mars and "space marines" are not well "space marines" as their outfits are more like SWAT team members. The story follows eight marines, teleported into a command centre of a secret base on a remote planet. There, they learn that something strange is happening and soon monsters start to appear. The monsters aren't from hell, but rather people mutated by some nasty super-virus although the monsters look very similar to those in the game. [...] There will be loads of shooting though, especially in the end where a large number of sequences will be shot purely in "first-person" perspective of the leading character (Karl Urban). The chainsaw and Bio Force Gun do appear in the film.
