As it does so very kindly like to do, id Software has released another dollop of engine source code. This latest is somewhat less exciting than many, simply offering the updated Doom 3 source from the BFG Edition but hey, now the folks at home can make the best and shiniest Doom 3 games yet.

Why, it seems like only yesterday that we were all jazzed about the launch of Doom 3, but at almost eight years old (eight!) it's now being remastered for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The BFG Edition of Doom 3 includes its expansion pack Resurrection of Evil, a new seven-level mission, the first two Doom games, and changes including... an armour-mounted flashlight!

Before it could release an open-source version of the Doom 3 engine code to all, id Software had to run it by the lawyers. But, their fierce eyes have spotted a slight problem. Chief id technomancer John Carmack is now writing new code to dodge legal issues surrounding the rendering technique, "Carmack's Reverse," which gave Doom 3 its lovely shadows.

id Software has said for several years that it intends to release the Doom 3 source code after Rage shipped, and now those plans are looking a little more concrete. During his legendary QCon keynote speech yesterday, id technical wizard John Carmack revealed that parent company ZeniMax has approved the source release, and it'll arrive some time after Rage's October launch (via Eurogamer).

The Dark Mod, a much-anticipated Doom 3 mod heavily inspired by Looking Glass Studios' seminal Thief first-person stealth series, has finally made it to beta over five years after development began. Snag the 1.4GB download from FileShack.
Only four missions are included as developer Broken Glass Studios--a name hinting at just how "inspired by" Thief the unofficial mod is--views The Dark Mod as a "mapping toolkit" for fans to create their own missions, using its custom editor DarkRadiant. Read more »

Well, I think many of us can recall the years and years that have gone by where the topic of the DOOM movie has come up and gone away countless times. It seems the time is finally here now and we just got a hold of the full 2 minute trailer which shows off some of the first person footage that looks to be featured a number of times in the movie. Here it is, the full trailer and a couple of grabs of that first person perspective:

Although the movie adaptation of DOOM has already finished shooting, Dark Horizons is just now talking about their visit to the set which was located in Prague. They revealed five things about the movie that they feel need to be known right this minute. 1.) The movie is going for a "Hard R" rating, 2.) the weapons and sets are reminiscent of classic DOOM, 3.) there isn't a ton of green screening, just plenty of men-in-suits, 4.) the story follows three soldiers answering a distress call on a new planet, and 5.) everything is based indoors.
For a more detailed explanation, click the link to check out their report. It is interesting to note, as did author Jeff Wilser, there's been barely any mention of the movie. "No promotion. No trailers. No teasers. Not even a one-sheet." It's also releasing in the movie dead month of October. Hm..

AICN points the way to this online journal by Doug Jones, the actor playing various Imps in the upcoming DOOM movie. Jones previously played Abe Sapien in the Hellboy movie, and has also had roles in Men in Black 2 and Adaption. As we mentioned the other day, principal photography recently wrapped.
While reclining on the plane ride home to L.A., I did my usual damage assessment, but thankfully, there's not much to report. Just bruised thumbs from repeated stunt falls onto a metal grated floor after taking blank bullet wounds to my Imp head last week. Oh yeah, I'm all about the glamour. I ended up being blown to bits a total of 4 times, bless my heart. Anyone who doesn't much care for me will LOVE watching this movie (cue the announcer: Doug Jones as four Imps, dying four bloody deaths ... in "Doom" ... at theatres everywhere August 2005).
