In a move to become the winner in the racing genre, Codemasters has announced it will create the Codemasters Racing brand to focus solely on its F1, DiRT and Grid franchises, abandoning the action genre altogether.

This Friday! Friday! Friday! Codemasters is offering the first in-game look at Dirt Showdown. Virtual drivers smash! dash! bash! and crash! for your amusement in a trailer and screenshots, giving a gander at how Codemasters is amping up the action in this offshoot of the once-sim-y racing series.

Perhaps with all the puns intended, Codemasters is spinning off its Dirt franchise into something a tad more flashy. Dirt Showdown has been announced, coming to the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 in May 2012. The game eschews its traditional features for arcade-style fun, including modes like demolition derby and stunt driving.
Codemasters promises this isn't the new direction for the series, simply a detour, as the company is said to "return with a renewed focus on simulation in Dirt 4."
