You may have noticed that the standalone version of smash-hit ArmA 2 mod DayZ missed its planned December launch, but there's a very good reason for that. Creator Dean Hall explains in a new blog post, "Put simply, DayZ Standalone isn't here because we had the chance to go from making a game that was just the mod improved slightly, packaged simply, and sold--to actually redeveloping the engine and making the game the way we all dreamed it could be."

DayZ has become one of the Shacknews community's favorite games, with a dedicated server for community members to set up shop and go on raids around nearby towns. "The core idea is that the events of DayZ took place five years ago and the world has moved on, so to speak," explains Geiger. "Remaining resources have largely been scavenged, exhausted or lost and mere survival has become even more of a challenge."

You've probably fantasized about the zombie apocalypse, but the one drawback is that real money will have lost all its value. Even the best zombie-hunting mercenaries will only get paid in canned goods and articles of clothing. Fortunately, video games don't have to make sense, so the DayZ Bounty club is like a dream come true: actual money in a zombie apocalypse. But the creators of DayZ are asking for the dev team to stop their work.
