Crysis, originally a PC-only powerhouse game that served as the perfect showpiece for your rig, recently received an announcement of impending console ports. Now we've learned that you won't have to wait much longer if you're a console player who missed out on the initial release. The game is set to release on October 4.

Two months after a console version of Crysis was spotted in a ratings database, Crytek has announced a "remastered" version of the original Crysis for Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network this October. Though Crysis 2 hit Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 as well, the 2007 original was only ever released on PC.

The hottest new trend in MMORPG business is transitioning a subscription-based game into a free-to-play game and Flying Lab Software's Pirates of the Burning Sea is the latest to make the change (via Massively).
As such, it is also subject to the requisite features matrix, which breaks down the differences between free, premium, and subscription accounts. Additional content will also be available for purchase "at Treasure Aisle, the new in-game store." Read more »

[Update: 12:41pm] Steam has updated the sale again, replacing Crysis with the Crysis: Maximum Edition for $19.99. Crysis remains $14.99 alone. Earlier, Day of Defeat was swapped with Day of Defeat: Source; however, Day of Defeat remains 75% off.

Thanks to games like Far Cry and Crysis, developer Crytek has firmly cemented itself as a purveyor of visually stunning first-person shooters. Crysis 2 is just around the corner (the series first foray onto consoles), due out sometime between October and the end of December.
New happenings seem to be afoot at Crytek, however. Based on a recent job posting, Crytek may have another big project in the works - one that is massively-multiplayer in nature. The job post, reprinted from LinkedIn by industry site superannuation, notes that the new position would be responsible for "designing, testing, and implementing as part of the development team, the systems infrastructure for an MMO online game." The joys of classic mech combat simulator series MechWarrior have come to Crysis with the release of MechWarrior: Living Legends beta v1.0, a 1.43GB mod available on FileShack.
The multiplayer mod boasts customisable mechs, battlesuits, tanks and aircraft by the dozen for players to pilot in objective-based gameplay modes as well as arena duels, all rendered in lovely Cry-o-vision. Read more »

Valve today announced that Sony Online Entertainment has joined the Steam family, bringing its many massively multiplayer titles to the digital distribution service.
The complete EverQuest and EverQuest II collections are now available on Steam, as well as Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, Pirates of the Burning Sea, and the most recent EverQuest expansions. All of the games will come packed with 30 days of free gameplay. Read more »

As the September 16 release of Crytek's sci-fi shooter Crysis Warhead (PC) approaches, Valve and Crytek today announced that both Warhead and the original Crysis will soon be sold through Valve's digital distribution client Steam.
Said to go up for pre-order this weekend, Crysis and Crysis Warhead are slated to hit Steam by mid September. No price points were provided. Read more »

While some argue that piracy can increase game sales by letting players take a "try before you buy" approach, Crytek business manager Harald Seeley isn't one of them.
Based on downloads of the last Crysis patch, he argues, there were "a lot more active [Crysis] players than there were unit sales."
And since those pirates are still playing the game months after release, Seeley reasons that "then they were a sale that didn't happen but probably would have had it not been possible to obtain the game illegally." Read more »

Optimizations made to Crytek's CryENGINE 2 will allow the upcoming sci-fi shooter follow up Crysis Warhead to run smoothly with high detail settings on cheap PCs, studio CEO Cevat Yerli has claimed.
Specifically, Yerli told German outlet PC Games that a 400 euro (roughly $620) PC could run the title, with high settings enabled, at 30 to 35 frames per second. Curiously, he did not detail the resolution at which this is possible. Read more »

The fall release of Crysis Warhead will be Crytek's last PC-exclusive effort, Crytek business manager Harald Seeley has revealed.
Earlier this year, Crytek president Cevat Yerli said that the studio would no longer have any PC-exclusive titles due to issues with piracy and higher sales on consoles. However, the company announced Crysis Warhead as a PC-only release last week. Read more »
