As promised, the time has come. If you were lucky enough to receive an invite, the PC closed beta for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive has begun. Originally scheduled to start in October, Valve pushed the beta's release to late November due to feedback from top Counter-Strike players.
The beta population will increase over time, according to Valve, as the company aims to hit the game's targeted "early 2012" release. But in typical Valve fashion, the developer said last month that there is "no mandate from anybody of when we have to ship this." Valve says CS:GO will ship when it's ready.

Apparently, some professional Counter-Strike 1.6 players apparently don't feel that the upcoming Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is quite ready for prime-time, yet. Based on the feedback they've received, Valve has elected to delay the 10,000-person closed beta for the game, which was originally planned to launch in October.
Valve's Chet Faliszek didn't have a new date for the closed beta to share, but when it finally does launch, the core focus will to be address any hardware compatibility issues that come to light. "The biggest thing of those first 10,000 is we have to look at percentage of crashes. You can argue with us on bullet-spray patterns and all kind of things, but crashes? There's really no argument for that. It shouldn't be happening."

Valve has just announced Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, a new game in its wildly popular Counter-Strike franchise. The team-based shooter is targeting Steam (PC and Mac), PlayStation Network, and Xbox Live Arcade for early 2012. CS: GO (as it's being called) is being developed at Valve with help from Hidden Path Entertainment, a Seattle studio that cut its Counter-Strike teeth lending a hand on Source updates.
