Valve forms Overwatch for CS:GO community to police itself

Valve forms Overwatch for CS:GO community to police itself

As someone reading this on the Internet, you know that people on the Internet are often awful. Doubly so if they're playing a video game. To help weed out horrors, Valve is playing with a community self-policing scheme for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. It sounds similar to the Tribunal in Riot's League of Legends, presenting players with "cases" of others who've been reported and asking them to make judgements.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive hostages piggyback to safety

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive hostages piggyback to safety

For umpteen years now, the fundamentals of rescuing hostages in Counter-Strike have remained the same. From the original mod, through the commercial release, the revamped Counter-Strike: Source, to the new CS: Global Offensive, you'd head to where they spawn, then lead all the idiot AIs home. But that young upstart shook things up in a patch yesterday, switching to randomised hostages you need to carry.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive patch has Vertigo

Classic Counter-Strike map de_vertigo has arrived in CS: Global Offensive's latest patch alongside a brand new map for Arms Race mode, the snowy ar_monastery. The update also shakes up matchmaking for Classic Competitive mode, making would-be terrorists and counter-terrorists queue rather than tossing them into games in progress.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive review

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive review

The Counter-Strike formula is universally recognizable and has been since it first saw the light of day in 1999 as a Half-Life mod. While it has undergone several iterations, the point has always been the same. Counter-Terrorists and Terrorists fight for honor and glory in a series of best of 10 matches. Counter-Strike: Global Offensive doesn't do much to reinvent this wheel, as it feels more like Counter-Strike: Source with a shiny new coat of paint. It's a fine jumping-on point for newcomers, but feels like a pricey update for CS veterans.

CS: GO looks undeniably gorgeous. Many classic CS maps make their return with fresh new detail and visually stunning effects. For example, Aztec is once again a part of the map rotation. In addition to new textures, players will notice weather effects as they trudge through the terrain. Many of the other classic maps feature similar upgrades, offering more realistic visuals than previous CS games. Veterans will feel right at home in many of these maps.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive preview

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive preview

Counter-Strike remains, to this day, the one title in which I've logged the most gameplay hours. For this reason, I was both cautiously optimistic and a bit nervous as I approached the Counter-Strike: Global Offensive kiosks in the Microsoft Xbox 360 area at E3. Not all of the series' spin-offs have been very good, and I'd never played Counter-Strike with anything other than a mouse and keyboard.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive loses cross-platform multiplayer

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive loses cross-platform multiplayer

Portal 2 gave us an exciting sneak peek into a cross-platform future where gamers could play multiplayer, regardless of what machine they were on. PS3 players were able to play with Mac and PC players across in glorious Steam-powered harmony.

Unfortunately, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive won't continue Valve's cross-platform experiment. While PS3-PC-Mac cross-play was promised, the feature is no being removed from the game.
