Command & Conquer campaign missions coming in 2014

EA's free-to-play Command & Conquer will be getting episodic missions. Though BioWare Victory had mentioned episodic missions as a possibility, the studio laid out its plans for them with more detail.

The campaign will include both single-player and co-op missions. The first missions will center around the Asia-Pacific Alliance, as it tries to create stability while the European Union challenges its authority. Meanwhile, both are under threat from the terrorist Global Liberation Army, so the two set to learn more about the GLA and defeat it.

Command & Conquer preview: general surprise

Command & Conquer preview: general surprise

Command & Conquer has a long legacy of strategy classics. However, the series lost its luster, especially with 2010's abysmal C&C4. When EA announced it would make the next game in the franchise free-to-play and multiplayer-only, the groan from RTS fans was deafening.

I wasn't sure what to expect from my demo, given that I preferred single-player over multiplayer offerings. To play, I would be confined to a skirmish mode game against an AI opponent. While I wasn't outright awed by what I played, it was clear that the C&C franchise was slowly moving back in the direction of its classic days.

Command & Conquer dev: 'We need to wash the stain of C&C 4 away'

Command & Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight was not well received by critics and fans, something that new developer Victory Games is well aware of as it creates a new Command & Conquer. A new developer diary video explains how the team is trying to get back to what made the series great to begin with.

"The first thing we said was we need to wash the stain of C&C 4 away," lead designer Samuel Bass said, "and to do that you really need to get back to your roots."

Command & Conquer wants to avoid 'pay to win'

Free-to-play games have been around for over a decade now, but many companies have been slow to explore the business model and even slower to make it not feel awful or exploitative. With the new Command & Conquer, it seems Electronic Arts may have the hang of it. Victory Games general manager Jon van Caneghem has detailed the sorts of things it'll sell in the free-to-play RTS, trying to avoid being "pay to win."

Command & Conquer Ultimate Collection gives early beta access to new F2P C&C

Paying $50 for a collection of 17 Command & Conquer games and expansion packs seems excessive, given that you'll most likely never play many of them, but that's what EA hopes you'll do in October. Ah, but there's a bonus--its 'Command & Conquer the Ultimate Collection' bundle includes early beta access to the curious new free-to-play Command & Conquer thing C&C: Generals 2 morphed into.
