Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 picks up right after the first game began. But, if you want the complete story, you'll need to play the 3DS spin-off Mirror of Fate.
"But gee, I don't have a 3DS," you might be saying. "If only they made an HD version for console," you might wish in this hypothetical scenario. Well, it appears your wishes may be coming true.
In the past two decades, the Castlevania name has gotten two separate critically-acclaimed revivals: 1997's Symphony of the Night, and 2010's Lords of Shadow. The mouthful of a game Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate attempts to marry the two. It joins LoS' mythology and basic combat mechanics with SotN's exploration, not to mention an extremely popular character. But the game never truly decides what it wants to be, and that indecision ultimately leads it to meander aimlessly and fail to live up to either legacy.
Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate is coming on March 5, but you'll get a chance to try it a little earlier than that. A demo of the game is coming to the eShop on February 28.
Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate is set to release this March on the 3DS, but the game could come to other platforms as a full HD title. Konami UK studio head Dave Cox says the team would "absolutely" consider an high-definition release, and it wouldn't even be very difficult to make.
Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate was pushed to 2013, positioning it a little closer to its console tie-in game Lords of Shadow 2. Konami has now dropped a more exact date for the game: March 5, 2013.
Halloween is upon us, and soon we'll all be handing out candy and attending parties to distract us from the depressing inevitability of death. But the spooky holiday also marks a prime time for trailers about macabre games, like the upcoming Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate.
The 3DS-exclusive Castlevania: Lords of Shadow interquel has been delayed. Originally scheduled for release this fall, Mirror of Fate has been pushed to 2013. No reason was given to Game Informer for the delay, but it will position the handheld game closer to the upcoming Lords of Shadow 2.
Mirror of Fate isn't the only high-profile 3DS game to be delayed in recent weeks. Nintendo also announced that Luigi's Mansion has also dropped to 2013.
Developer MercurySteam's gritty take on the Castlevania franchise proved to be a tremendous success for Konami. According to the publisher, Lords of Shadow is the most successful Castlevania game ever. But, MercurySteam is keen on ending the series on a high note, with Lords of Shadow 2 concluding not only the trilogy, but their involvement with the franchise.
"Our intention is to tell our story and then move on to other things," producer David Cox said. "We have no intention of milking the series any further than that."

What is Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate (other than a mouthful)? When the title was leaked, many feared that the upcoming 3DS game would move away from the franchise's 2D heritage. The Castlevania games were among the best titles on Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS--so Konami wouldn't want to abandon such a winning formula, right?
Mirror of Fate is an interesting marriage of Lords of Shadow and the classic 2D Metroidvania games. The game is played on a 2D plane, but features the combat of its 3D console counterparts.
Though the cork was popped a bit early with Konami's leaked E3 schedule, a 3DS Castlevania game has now been confirmed. Titled Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate, the new game is said to feature Trevor Belmont as the main protagonist, making for his first starring role since Castlevania III on the NES.
