Now, really, the correct way to look at the latest annual Call of Duty setting record sales every year is that video games are becoming a greater part of mainstream culture, making them more acceptable. So, really, you should be glad that Activision today announced that, on top of setting new day-one sales records, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 has beaten last year's installment to the $1 billion mark. You are, aren't you?

Activision has gone over the launch-day figures for the latest Call of Duty game and once again declared the latest instalment the biggest-selling yet. Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 sold-through an estimated $500 million in its first 24 hours on sale, according to data from market research firm Chart-Track and its own internal sources. You may personally be growing tired of annualised Call of Duty sequels, but the world certainly isn't.

Call of Duty Elite's launch last year was by no means smooth. In fact, Activision offered an olive branch for fans that struggled to access the for-pay services, as the servers were hammered by hundreds of thousands of enthusiastic Call of Duty fans. Elite memberships were extended by 30 days to account for the long service outage--an offer which Activision has oddly expanded.

Look, there's going to be another Call of Duty game next year. But what will it be? Given the trend, smart money would be on an Infinity Ward-developed Modern Warfare 4--and that's supposedly what we'll be getting.

Activision's Call of Duty series has ruled the roost on the Xbox Live activity charts for a few years now. The current game usually tops the list and others fight for the remaining nine spots. But Minecraft has been no slouch in the sales department, and just recently released a large update, helping push the game to the top of the charts and past the usually-dominant Modern Warfare 3.

The "season of content" for Modern Warfare 3 is about to end--just in time for the release of Black Ops 2, of course. Collection 4, aka "Final Assault," contains five new maps: Gulch, Boardwalk, Offshore, Decommission, and Parish. Call of Duty Elite subscribers on Xbox 360 will be able to download their final maps on September 5th, while regular Xbox 360 players will be able to get the content one day later, on September 6th. PS3 and PC players will have to wait, of course.
Activision has released a new trailer, showing off the game's final maps. We wonder: will Black Ops 2 players be so lucky to have 24 pieces of post-release content as well?

The second-to-last downloadable content collection for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has hit Xbox Live, accessible to those that do not have a Call of Duty Elite membership. While PC and PlayStation 3 will have to wait about a month to get their hands on this content, all platforms are getting a double XP weekend to mark the event. The double XP will last between today and Monday, and Infinity Ward promises a double weapon XP event later this month.

Activision's Q2 2012 results were released today, boasting positive results and an optimistic outlook for the rest of the fiscal year. The quarter ending on June 30 saw non-GAAP revenues of $1.05 billion, an improvement over its forecast of $950 million. It credited the success of Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure and Diablo 3 for the results, even as it acknowledged some shifting habits in its other big franchises.

It appears Call of Duty may finally shed its aging engine. If so, Black Ops 2 will be the last game to use the IW engine, which has its roots in id Tech 3. Based on the resume of an Infinity Ward engineer, Activision's other Call of Duty studio is working on a "new high-end DX11 code base."
