Team Fortress 2 items celebrate QuakeCon 2011

Valve wants the share the QuakeCon love with Team Fortress 2 players. As part of the QuakeCon sale on Steam, each of the classes--soldier, engineer, heavy, and sniper--gets a new toy inspired by Bethesda-related titles.

These items are all bonuses, awarded for either owning or pre-ordering the specific they're drawn from. If any of them sound like things you'd like to add to your Team Fortress 2 player, act quick. QuakeCon ends this Sunday, and the promotion cuts off Monday morning, August 8 at 10am PDT. Sorry, no hats; however, there is an "Anger hood" from Brink and an "Iron helmet" from The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. I guess that sort of counts.

Bethesda servers hacked, accounts may be compromised

An intrusion by hackers has led publisher Bethesda to issue a warning to users. Though the company says that no financial or credit card information was obtained, user names, e-mails, and passwords may have been compromised. The company advises changing passwords on Bethesda sites and forums, as well as any other sites that may use the same username or password.

Bethesda says the hack took place over the weekend while LulzSec, the group claiming responsibility for the hack, says it took place "over two months ago." A statement from the group suggests the hack started with Brink and moved on to other Bethesda property. It claims to have released everything from the compromised server except the user data because "we actually like this company." Read more »

Brink 'Agents of Change' free DLC detailed

When Brink publisher Bethesda promised to release its first downloadable content for free to apologise for issues Splash Damage's shooter suffered at launch, we weren't expecting it to be anything substantial. However, the 'Agents of Change' pack, as it turns out to be called, has been revealed as a tasty little freebie indeed.

Slated to arrive some time in June, Agents of Change will bring two new maps, five new player abilities, two new weapon attachments and two new character outfits to the class-based shooter. It'll also boost the level cap by 4 to 24, which should let players equip more perks. Read more »

Brink review

Brink review

Brink's design draws from both sides of the established mold for shooters, melding together a single-player campaign with a multiplayer game built around developing unique player characters. The result creates a hybrid team-based shooter with a story to tell that maintains a fast but purposeful pace whether or not it's being played online with others. That is, when it works.

First Brink DLC will be free

It's been a tough launch week for Brink. A number of issues have plagued the newest team-based shooter across all platforms--PC, 360, and PS3. As a token of appreciation to fans for sticking with the game, publisher Bethesda announced it plans to give the first Brink DLC pack away for free. Set to be available in June, it will include new maps and content for players. No pricing had been previously announced for the pack.

In the meantime, work continues in earnest to improve the game. A configuration change for 360 players has been put in place that sets Campaign and Freeplay modes to eight total human players in matchmaking. This should lessen the load on hosts and result in more reliable, consistent matches. The change is already in place and will take effect the next time you login to play. Those with ample bandwidth will still be able to play full 8v8 maps with a new "Big Teams" option in Freeplay or through setting up Private matches. Read more »
