Battlefield 3 Close Quarters DLC hands-on preview

Battlefield 3 Close Quarters DLC hands-on preview

As we reported, the infantry-focused Battlefield 3 DLC pack "Close Quarters" arrives this June. I got a chance to try out one of the four maps planned for the expansion at its announcement event. An upscale modern residential condo, the layout of its many rooms covered a few thousand square feet as opposed to the eponymous sprawling battlefields where the fighting has taken place up to now. Running through its halls felt immediately familiar and not at all unlike a match of Modern Warfare, Battlefield's rival in the online shooter space. That feeling wore off, though, as I spent more time with it and the Battlefield in the game started to come through.

Battlefield 3 DLC resumes in June; three packs announced

Whereas Call of Duty fans are paying for a year-long "season of content" with Modern Warfare 3, things have been quiet on the Battlefront side of things. The game's first expansion pack--Back to Karkand--came out in December and was available for free for everyone that purchased an early edition of the game. But, isn't it time for some new maps?

You'll get exactly that when Battlefield 3's next DLC arrives in June.

EA praises Call of Duty Elite; hopes to trump it

Electronic Arts has made some significant progress in its attempts to capture more of the market share of the first-person shooter. Battlefield 3's piece of the first-person pie jumped eleven percent last year--from 13% to 24%--but the publisher is thinking of ways to up the ante even further. Recognizing the success of Activision's Call of Duty Elite service, EA is determined to get "one step ahead," perhaps by developing a similar service for its own military shooter franchise.

Few things in competitive multiplayer games are more annoying than encountering cheaters, as breaking the rules of the game ruins the experience for everyone else. Thankfully, the good folks at DICE feel the same way, and have implemented some new anti-cheating measures for Battlefield 3, fresh on the heels of stat-wiping and banning a sizable number of said cheaters from the game.

Battlefield 3 fifth 'fastest rising' search on Google

According to its annual Zeitgeist report, Google has revealed the DICE-developed shooter Battlefield 3 is the fifth "fastest rising" search term of 2011. The terms "Battlefield 3" and the related "BF3" saw an increase of 1,773% between 2010 and 2011.
