If youre methodical and hunt down every single quest in an area youll get more than enough experience points that will allow you to continue on to the next zone without the fear of being owned by more powerful enemies. The transition from one zone to the next is strongly related to the quests and their objectives, which are usually grouped together in a couple of areas. As such, when you leave a town, you can complete 10 or even more quests at once before returning to cash in your rewards.
