Editorial: Assassin's Creed needs more than Fassbender

Editorial: Assassin's Creed needs more than Fassbender

Video games and films are not generally on good terms. Hollywood has tried to crack the nut over and over, but the infamously terrible examples of adaptations continue to mount. Producers still haven't figured out what makes a successful video game to film adaptation, but we have a pretty good idea of what doesn't. And as much as I enjoy the work of Michael Fassbender, his name alone isn't enough to inspire confidence in the Assassin's Creed film project.

Assassin's Creed 3 preview

Assassin's Creed 3 preview

Connor is easily the deadliest assassin Ubisoft has created. Killing comes easily to Assassin's Creed III's new hero, who shows no pause when killing a man. In one sequence, I saw Connor jump on top of someone, stab him, and continue running after his target. Someone tried to block his progress, but he simply stabbed the man, shoving his squirting body away. Connor continues chasing his target, without skipping a beat. It's a minor tweak from the original formula, but it makes the chase sequences in Assassin's Creed III that much more riveting.

Ubisoft goes after author in Assassin's Creed dispute

Ubisoft goes after author in Assassin's Creed dispute

Author John L. Beiswenger had sued Ubisoft, claiming its popular Assassin's Creed franchise had too many similarities to his 2002 novel, Link. Both share chair-shaped devices that allow characters to relive memories of ancestors. Two days ago, Beiswenger backed away from the case, with the option of revisiting it later.

Ubisoft isn't sitting idly by, however. Instead, it's asking the court to declare the author's original suit as "without merit" to eliminate the chance the case is reopened.
