Anno dev Related Designs acquired by Ubisoft

Anno series and Might & Magic Heroes Online developer Related Designs has joined the Ubisoft family, with the publisher announcing today that it has acquired the German studio. Related will continue working on MMHO and will make more games with Ubi's Blue Byte studio, which it collaborated with on Anno 2070.

"Ooh," you may have said in reaction to the announcement of Anno 2070's Deep Ocean add-on. "A proper expansion pack, we don't see many of those nowadays, it's all DLC this and DLC that. But when's it coming out, and for how much?" I probably would've replied, "Yes, DLC, I know, stop going on about it. And no, I don't know." But I do now, because Ubisoft dated and priced it yesterday.

Anno 2070 expansion Deep Ocean announced

The sea shall deliver more treasures and terrors this fall in an expansion for futuristic build-y strategy Anno 2070, named Deep Ocean. Announced yesterday by publisher Ubisoft, it'll bring a new civilization level, over 150 quests, tsunamis, and more.

Ubisoft server migration breaks supposedly safe games

Ubisoft had warned that a number of its PC games would be unplayable while the publisher transferred servers, thanks to its frightful DRM. The move is underway today, but it seems some games which were supposed to be safe are not working either.

Some Ubisoft games unplayable during online service transfer

Publisher Ubisoft has announced that it will be transitioning the hosting of many of its online services "from a third-party data center to a new facility" on February 7. During the transition, which is meant to "improve the maintenance of our infrastructure and deliver better uptime and greatly improved services for our customers," some Ubisoft titles across a number of platforms will be completely or partially unplayable.

Anno 2070 demo sets sail on PC

After a whistlestop tour of the past, city-building strategy series Anno (aka Dawn of Discovery) is preparing to blast off into the future with Anno 2070. Publisher Ubisoft is giving a little taste of that gleaming tomorrow, today, with a 1GB demo you can download here at Shacknews.

Anno 2070 is set in a flooded future, where you'll still need to juggle resources, trade and diplomacy in setting up your trade routes and cities. However, this time around you'll get to play with robots and submarines rather than peasants and frigates, and even build underwater.

Anno 2070 announced, coming this winter

Ubisoft has announced a new installment in the long running RTS franchise Anno, released in North America under various names including Dawn of Discovery. Taking the series to the future, Anno 2070 is coming to the PC in winter 2011.

Developed by series regular Related Designs with help from Ubisoft's Blue Byte studio, Anno 2070 takes place in "a near-future environment where climate change has forced humanity to adapt to rising sea levels that have left stretches of once-fertile land completely inhospitable." According to a press release, there are two factions available for players to choose from: the industrial Tycoons or environmentally-friendly Ecos. Read more »
