Angry Birds Star Wars coming to PS4 and Xbox One with new features

As the next console generation rushes towards us, the announcement of just one more exclusive game could shift a lot of sales to one platform or another and whip console warriors into a violent frenzy. Multiplayer in Angry Birds Star Wars shown off, not very exciting

Multiplayer in Angry Birds Star Wars shown off, not very exciting

In spite of the countless sequels and spin-offs, Angry Birds has never featured multiplayer. That's about to change with the upcoming console version of Angry Birds Star Wars for Xbox 360, PS3, Vita, Wii U, Wii, and 3DS.

Exclusive to Activision's port, two multiplayer modes will be available: four-player competitive and two-player co-op. Before you get carried away, do note that this is probably the least interesting way of adding multiplayer to the franchise. Instead of flinging birds at one another, it appears to be a pass-the-controller affair, with players simply taking turns launching their birds. Considering the retail version goes for up to $50, one would hope that a bit more ingenuity would've been on display.

The Wii U version will be out November 5, same day as the other current-gen consoles. Like Black Ops 2 before it, the Wii U version will support Wii Remote and second-screen GamePad features.

Angry Birds Star Wars 2 figures use QR codes, not NFC

Angry Birds Star Wars 2 takes a page from Skylanders by connecting the game to real-world toys. By placing toys on a physical "Telepod," you'll be able to instantly transfer new characters into Rovio's newest slingshot game.

But, very few mobile devices support NFC--the technology that powers the instant data transfer that Skylanders takes advantage of. How will Angry Birds support importing characters? Using a magnifying glass, apparently.
